Post Suggested Amateur Practice Methods?
What's goin on all.
I'm new here as well as to drums. I was given a new set in May and have been wanting to get a set for a good while before that so it was good news heh.
Either way I've been practicing pretty inconsistantly mostly cause I don't have a practice structure. I am fairly good for a starter, I've spoken to a few experienced musicians to get some opinions. I've developed my skills in rhythm and co-ordination through dance, I'm kind of a pro-star at that heh, my point though is that I've carried on some of those disciplines into my drumming.

Normally I'd start with a few rudiments like paradiddle, and some of the other stuff like single stroke rolls.. I'd keep on a stopwatch and do 1 - 2 min of each and repeat... Than maybe get into a groove and start workin on different sections of the set while maintaining a groove trying to come up with some interesting rhythms and than maintaining them.. Afterwards moving onto another part of the set attempting the same idea...

Still. My question is I think an obvious one.
If you are an experienced drummer/teacher, would you say that

A: Am I on the right track
B: What other rudiments or practice technique's/methods would you add to my solo practice sessions.

P.S. I practice sometimes with a band too, It's definately one of the best ways to improve from what I felt so far, there's nothing like being Needed to maintain the steady rhythm and that helps a lot, for starters like me at least hehe.

You'll want a metronome.
Look for inspiration and ideas on youtube. Helps a lot too.

It sounds like you're a drum set player right?...pick up some books. Watch a shit load of videos. Practice alot.

Some GREAT books:

Drumkit:

Reed- "Syncopation 1 and 2"
Carmine Appice's "Ultimate Realistic Rock"
Tommy Igoe's "Groove Essentials"
Gavin Harrison's "Rhymics Perspectives" and "Rhythmic Illusions"-advanced

Snare:

John Pratt's "14 Modern Contest Solos"
George Lawrence Stone's "Stick Control"
Buster Bailey's "Wrist Twisters"
Matt Savage's "Rudimental Workshop"
Micheal Colgrass's "6 unacompanied snare solos"
Jaques Delecluse's "douze etudes"
....and many more

check em out. Some are hard as hell. others aren't so bad

Remember! Practice doesn't make perfect. Correct practice makes perfect!

I am not a kit player but can certainly say it is all about stick control and the basic fudimentals of playing. Play from the fingers not the wrists. Arm movement will always be required but it is the fingers and thumb pending style you play that will get you going.

I have listened to several drummers over the years who use strength verse feness and you can certainly tell a difference in cleanliness of the score etc...

On a nother note, speed is required but not if you sacrifice the playing of the score and/or the movement. Start at a slow speed and build on up. However, each time you get to a fast ability never continue at a slow pace for your warm ups. Push a bit so you may go a bit further.

Hope this may help..

Cheers,
Eric McCoy
