Post Laptop
as one's sound module.

lately when I play electronic drums, they've been plugged into a laptop running ableton. really cool, you can make the sounds on the pads change with the section of the song.

Dude, tell me more about this Ableton set up your running? I am putting together a band to perform some really intricate industrial rock, and I need exactly what your talking about - changing the sample assigned to each trigger in the middle of the song.
I'd like to be able to have the entire live show programed on my laptop in a timeline layout, and have all of the triggers programed to change samples at certain points in the timeline.
Also, does Ableton give you the option to make or import your own samples? I would imagine it would use .wav files.
Another thing that concerns me is a metronome. Can I run a metronome track thats in perfect sync with the timeline out to a single headphone mix for just me? I'm reading up on Ableton right now and finding very little to explain the features of the program, for this kind of use anyway.

I'm fairly new to this. Here's what I'm planing to do: Use a simple 4pc drum kit with triggered mesh heads, and maybe up to 10 other triggered pads around the drums. I'll be using acoustic cymbals. The triggers are simple, just get good ones. But it's the I/O interface and proper software that I'm not sure of. What do you think would be the best I/O interface for that many triggers? I run a Dell Inspiron running Windows XPpro.

And this is my first post on this message board! I think this forum's awesome and I'm sad I didn't find it sooner. So hello everyone!

I've been doing some research. I think the Alesis Trigger I/O is the best input interface for what I'm trying to do. However, I still can't be sure, it doesn't say whether or not I would still need a better soundcard in my laptop, and I can't be sure if it will simply send the trigger signals into my laptop or if it is only a sound module itself. I know it has drums sounds and samples, but can I run it without using the onboard module and just simply use it as an interface to get the triggers into my laptop to trigger sounds from the laptop.

It does seem to be the only interface I can find that has more than 8 trigger inputs. I was looking into M-Audio Deltas, and I can't seem to find any that have more than 4 inputs, which is funny because I swear I've seen much larger Deltas than the 44 or 66. What I would imagine would be the best route to go here would be an interface that has no sound module built in, one that is only designed to rout trigger signals into a computer. Kind of like a patch bay with a USB out to go into a computer.

Any ideas?

my friend has a firewire midi in-out running into his apple powerbook. I'm not sure of the brand. I'll ask.

look up Ableton Live on the net. I can't even begin to explain how powerful this program is. I am not sure whether it acts as a recording setup like Cubase or Nuendo but I think it does. I use Nuendo or Sound Forge for recording samples at home. We just load the samples in that I record/buy/find plus the ones he has. You can sequence, trigger those sequences, loop, edit, use it as a live soundbank...

Please, I was told this is usb only. I trigger out of my laptop and there is a delay in the usb2.0, enought to bug me atleast.
Thanks!

I use a Mackie Onyx Satellite Firewire interface for performances; firewire is less prone to latency than USB.

OHHHH. I thaought you ment 1 straight cable, thats what I need. My firepod works with no latency, but I don't want to travel with it. Thanks though.

yeah, that's why I got the Mackie, it's got a very small 2 channel interface that is portable, but fits back into the base unit in the studio.
Very convenient for gigging. I don't know of any way around an interface though- (plus, this way you get much better audio signal output quality than going from the headphone output jack)
