Josh Freese was with APC.
Carey's work with Tool is truly amazing, he definitely has something different from many other modern rock drummers. His stuff with Volto! is also very good. You get to see a whole broader aspect to his drumming.
He's got a lot of breadth to his playing. He can be reserved, but at the same time he can crack out these amazing beats that get stuck in your head (Ticks and Leeches, Schism, Sober, etc). He's got jazz, metal, fusion, and rock stuff under his belt. He's played hard rock/progressive rock with Tool, electronica with Zaum, but he's also played with Carole King.

I'm going to be controversial now... He's obviously a great drummer and can be pretty experimental but I struggle to hear emotion in his playing. A lot of Tool's stuff leaves me cold and their songs are overly long for no reason, repetetive introductions, etc.
..um..watch him and u will see his emotion...i find it hard to hear emotion..yes tools songs are very long..but repetitive they are not..they are called progressive rock for a reason

I'm w/you. Tool and Carey are fine w/me, but I get almost the same feeling where it just doesn't make me want to come back for more. Excellent talent, just doesn't speak to me on the same level as most other people that I share musical tastes with.

yea he has the potential for awesome frumming but it takes ages for it to develop in songs. it would great if there was a battle between danny carey and tomas haake for the techincal drumming battle of the century

Danny Carey is a really good drummer, but I don't think he can match with Tomas Haake in terms of time signatures and overall flow. Danny has power in his playing with Tool and everything, but Tomas flows over his kit, and makes difficult time signatures look easy. Check out 'New Millennium Cyanide Christ', or 'Bleed' by Meshuggah. The bassdrum part for 'Bleed' is torturous to play.
I'm not bashing Danny Carey at all, I think he's a good drummer, I just think that Tomas Haake is a more technical player.

What Carey represents to me is how far someone can take progressive rock drumming. (Yes/King Crimson/ELP type playing) without going over the edge in complexity or technicality.
He has a Bill Bruford style of moving around his kit, but more of a Carl Palmer sense of experimentation with sound.
The emotion and feel of his playing, to me, comes from the fact that his beats are complex and intricate and can be in 13/8 without feeling choppy. He flows very well with irregular signatures, just like Bill Bruford.

I met Danny Carey a few years back when he was touring through South Carolina. I gave him a few cymbals, prototypes, that I worked on to get his opinion. He was openly enthusiastic about reviewing something different. He even used one of the bells for rest of the Tool tour and I caught a picture of him still using it with Pigmy Love Circus.
He was a very personable and friendly person.
He let me play his Paiste drum kit before the show in the big arena. It was a great experience. He gave me passes to the show and party passes. He played an awesome show and then I met him backstage. He was very warm to everyone at his party and very friendly to me. He was very approachable, down to earth, respectable and actually humble.
I have met a lot of the top drummers and Danny Carey is numero uno when it comes to being a great guy.

Even back when I was 100% focused on my school jazz band, working with combos, and pretty much playing just jazz, I idolized Carey. Out in LA I met him before a VOLTO gig. You're right; he's a really good guy.

of the topic of him being a great guy, he is very unorthodox. His drums are made of Paiste metal, and he bases his drumming on the Unicursal Hexagram (which is the symbol Alleister Crowley based his rituals on). This is not bashing him, his drumming is so amazing I can barely figure out how he's playing, I'm just pointing out that he has certainly taken his drumming to a whole new level

for a real treat, watch him in that video towards the end. he slips the stick underneath his arm, pulls out the mallet, hits the gong, then picks his stick back up and continues playing without missing a single beat.

as my user name suggests, i am a huge fan of tool.....danny is totally out of this world....he has soo much creativity and style flowing in his drumming....i mean in songs like eulogy, lateralus and 46 &2......hes fantastic....totally love him....my favourite drummer
