Post Worst cymbal ever?
what was the worst cymbal you've ever played?
you know, a cymbal that just sounds like poop

for me, it'd have to be the 14 inch crash that came free with my Meinl MCS set
now i know why it came free =X

16" A Zildjian Thin Crash. It rang like a gong forever.

I picked up a 16" Thin, 18" Thin 18" Medium Sabian B8 pro crashes a few years ago that had the zildjian beat. Thats how bad it was. Bought those for 70 dollars. Sold them for 70 each.

Any cymbals that come free w/ starter and interidiate sets (esp. the hi hats)

I've playes Tama brand crash/ ride/ and hats w/ NO voice at all. Might as well have been trash can lids

But nothing has ever sounded worst than the peices of garbage that came with my Groove Percussion. 14 hats and 16 crash. They horrible with no tone at all. The crash sounded like crap and just "crashed" and died right after with no ring or decay. I was so glad to get my ZBTs after playing on those for a year

Cymbals that come with really cheap starter kits, they have gotta be the worst, but then you expect them to be. The hi hats turn inside out when you hit them hard lol.
The first 'proper' cymbals i got were the Sabian Solars, awful things, crash was definetly the worst.

I have a Sabian Solar 16" crash, it is so lifeless that I actually use it as a ride!

Total crap.

really...

people should be talking about decent crappy sounding cymbals.

of course 'pearl' and other beginner cymbals are going to sound like ass.

with that being said... the Z mega-bell ride is terrible for anything other than bell work.

Yeah, I'm gonna exclude ay beginner cymbals that arent really cymbals. if they came with your $300 revere set, they dont count as cymbals. I'm gonna have to go with these old zildjian hihats my fried has. they are SOO thick and they dont sound good open or closed. I'v never seen old avedis hats that didnt sound good but these sound TERRIBLE

yeah, I guess REAL cymbals are more relative. haha. Sabian B8's I dont like and lots of Paistes I don't like either. Well, I'm sure I'll make an enemy or two with this one but I'm sorry, it's my honest opinion. I play Paiste RUDE's on my friends set (he has a grip of them on his bohemoth of a set. haha) and I just do not care for them at all

If we're talking not no-name brands, I would have to say either the Zildjian ZBT hats or ride. The hats felt heavy and akward, and their articulation just got on my nerves. As for the ride, it was way to ringy, and the bell wasn't pronounced enough to sound proper. I love some of Zildjian's higher ends, but I would choose B8s or PST5s over ZBTs anyday.

my old instructor has a 16" medium thin avedis zildjian crash that just sounded horrible. ive played the exact same model of other cymbals and they all sounded fine but this one had no musicality to it and i couldnt stand it. he wasnt using it as one of his main crashes (k custom sessions took those spots) but still....

another one is the z custom mega bell ride. just horrible. i dont have anything good to say about this cymbal.

Yea its quite a heavy ride that, you could eat cereal out of the bowl ffs haha, there was a drummer i seen playing with one at a gig, and it was so heavy the boom arm kept sliding around so the cymbal ended up at a slant hitting off the kick drum!

Azzback, I know what your talking about. The cymbals that came with Groove Percussion stuff sucked ass.

I used to think the Sabian B8's were horrible, until I heard Camber cymbals. Ya know that sound that makes you punch babies?? Yea, that sound.

I used to have an Axl Rose drum which are probably made in the same factory as Rolling drums. It also includes their cymbals which sounds crap. I was so happy to get my ZBT cymbals after playing them for years. But after a few months of playing my ZBT, I found out that their hihat just doesn't sound that good!

one of the gigs I played during sxsw involved a house kit with some zbt's. I was horrified, and the car was parked on the other end of downtown with my cymbal bag in the trunk. SUCK. At least the drums were tuned well.

I think the worst cymbals I've ever heard were the sunlites, tho. clang clang clang went the trolley.

Sabian B8 and B8 pro - horrible, when I hear crash I wanna cry
Orion Twister - quite popular in Poland, becouse they r very cheap. But sounds terrible
Camber - what the hell is that? Sounds like my teacher bangin' the door Smile

And od course - Premier Olympic cymbals - that free, premier used to give them 4 free to olympic kits. I don't know are they still doing it, becouse that was a murder on the drummer's ears ;] The worst of all free-add cymbals.

On the subject of crap no-name cymbals though, my old school had some free with a kit and asked me to come in and tune and set it up. !st time i hit it the thing dented! not inverted or anything, a stick shaft sized dent!

again... this thread really is pointless if we're talking beginner cymbals.

of course ZBTs sound bad. of course stagg cymbals sound bad.

i don't need to even play them to tell you they sound bad.

this would be way more interesting if people talked about higher end cymbals they didn't care for.

yeah, agree. you can cut aout a round piece of sheet metal and shape it like a cymbal. thats what comes with those cheap rumsets. those are not cymbals. b8's zbts ect are cheap and cheaply made. they do not sound good.

Lets hear about to worst pro level cymbal you'v ever heard.

another one for me was this 16" Zcustom med thin crash i have. its sounded terrible til the day it cracked uner its own pressure from being made too thick.

EDIT- Its was a Z custom medium.

oh... the Z customs... had a 17 & 18 inch crash. got it along with some dinobeat hi-hats and a mega bell ride.

had to have been one of the nastiest sounding cymbal sets up of all time.

playing the hi-hats open was especially grating.

i thought the crashes were crap as well. really 'gongy' sounding.

there's a special black spot in my heart for any Z-series cymbal.

also, pretty much any thick crash cymbal gets my vote for teh lose.

also, those annoying ride cymbals with the HUGE bells that various manufacturers make.

worst "high end" would most def. have to be a 20" sabian vault ride the local GC got in about 2 weeks after they opened (the first time i walked in the store) went back to check out their cymbals, hated that son of a mehgan. the bell sound made me want to punch my grandmother in the face, and just normal made my proud to own a mx series put out by cb percussion (came with my first kit and i actully like the thing) HOLY S#!T!!! and then there was a set of z custom hats that made me want to use them as clay pidgions, but have liked every other pair of z cutom hats that were on other people kits that ive played, i dont get it. and since its what the "cool" kids are doing, i have a pair of 14" ZBT hats that i hate when closed...open they rock, but they are too thick for the sound i want when closed. theres my two cents

Thats so surprising. I cant imagine never hearing a single cymbal from one of the big 4 that i'v liked. I love paiste signatures. alot

oldschool paistes have such a different characteristic than any other cymbal. that high-end shimmer. I can get into it if every cymbal in the set is a paiste, but you throw em into a set with any other cymbal brand and it just sounds off.

Oh man.... you guys really want to talk about kind of high end bad sounding cymbals? I cant believe no one mentioned these yet. Well, here it comes. ZILDJIAN ZXT TITANIUM SERIES!!! ALL OF IT!!!! * Well, except the splash cymbals* Worst sounding cymbals I have EVER heard. @#!$!$ Horrible experience. Im so glad Guitar Center took them back even though I was 30 days past on the Return Policy. If they didnt take it, I probably would have quit playing drums.

I've played/owned primarily Zildjian for 10+ years...started with Scimitar series (awful, just awful - but entry level) and eventually purchased pro lines (A, A Custom, Z Custom). Over time, I've stuck with the A series; I just think they sound good in all music I play. They also have some type of "glittery" sound on the high end that I don't hear in any other brands, as well as a nice wide tonal spectrum.

I have played Sabian, but I couldn't get over a preceived narrow tonal spectrum - very mid-rangy and limited character (played 16" AA medium crash, 16", 17", 18" AAX Stage Crashes, 20" AAX Stage Ride, 18" HH China) with exception to a shimmering 18" AA Sound Control Crash and glassy 8" AA Splash that I've never heard again after I cracked them. Shame on me - sorry Rory. I admit, I'm a very hard hitter.

Then I bought Paiste 2002 series (14" Medium Hats, 16" Medium Crash, 20" Medium Ride). The hats were a joke, especially after noticing dents on the edge of top hat within a month of purchasing them, plus they were extremely soft with very little tonal character (though a relatively decent 'chick' sound in the closed position). The crash had very little volume when it was needed (I understand it was only a 16") and had limited tonal character as well. HOWEVER, I was impressed with the ride. That thing could growl, piss, and moan like it was nobody's business AND be musical at the same time. I sold it, though. I gave the crash to someone who needed it, and still retain the hats as the "if I have to" back up hats. I've also played Paiste Alphas - awful. Though, I think Alphas are mid-level, right? Not quite pro, but not entry. Hats, Crash, Ride, China - all bad.

Needless to say, I went back to Zildjian. Paiste would be my "Worst Cymbal Ever" experience.

Maybe I'll melt a bunch of pennies and make my own cymbal. That'll probably be the Worst Cymbal EVER.
