Post Joey Jordison's Snare
I'm curious, how come everyone seems so enamoured with Joey's snare? I mean, I don't like Joey to begin with so maybe I'm biased but I don't notice his snare sound as being hugely different from the next metal drummer's.

Theres nothing special about it. Its deep, and 13 inches. but in the end, its just a snare with some silly ghetto looking S's around it. It doesnt sound radically different from a 14" drum with slightly less depth.

Dont drink the coolaid.

people like it because.
A. when you crank a steel snare it usually give a pretty devistating crack.
B. They love joey jordinson and want to touch his face.

well theres the kids that hink hes the worst drummer ever and that they need to dedicate theyre lives to making sure everyone knows he sucks, and then theres the type of kid who thinks hes the best drummer in the world and that guys like thomas lang should be playing more like joey. I think theyre equally obsessed

basically wat the ploughman said its just a snare with a s on it and u can get another snare to sound almost the same as it, and ppl that like joey think his stuff is the best and i dont really like any of his stuff, like his custom kit or w/e i just think its a low end pearl kit, and i dont dislike joey, but i dont like em either, i mean i dont like the style of music he plays. Other then that hes a good drummer at what he does

If you were really wondering and not just asking a stupid loaded question you could look down half a page and find a topic all about it.

It aint that loud over all the guitars so I think the Yamaha Oak Musahi snare drum is louder!

I've hit it a few times, its really not that bad. It has a nice tone to it when tuned nice.

Here is a video of someone playing on it:

http://youtube.com/watch?v=ZEZ6vDChcS4

check out his channel for more vids, he plays a decapitated song which means a lot of blast beats.

Look mate, why are you being such a prick about this?

I didn't abuse or insult anyone, I asked a simple question, that's all (and I fail to see how it qualifies as 'loaded'). I've never tried playing it and I really was just wondering. Is that really so hard to believe?

We really didnt need another 13 year old praising joey in a new thread, just use the old one.

I take it back. The guys who hate joey really are more obsessed than the ones who like them. Calm down dude, It was an honest question.

I think its just becasue its easy to get a loud crack out cheap steel snare. people see the drum, they buy into the hype, and they end up accually likeng the way it sounds. I couldnt se the thing having amazing tone, warmth, body, tuning range etc. but alot of the type of people who are huge JJ fans arent even looking for that stuff in a drum (god knows why not)

Cheers! That's all I wanted to know. I just didn't feel like sorting through all the 13 year olds praising Joey to find out. Was all the abuse really necessary?

I watched a guy .......old guy... play with one of these the other night at guitar center. Its not a bad snare. A little more depth than an acrolite, decent sounding. Reasonably sensitive. Most of them will probably never get played that way, or tuned like he did it. It sounded like a snare drum instead of plastic breaking.

it seems like there's crowds of people devoted to trashtalking ANY of the more famous drummers nowadays.

i like aaron gillespie (underoath) and his style, and everytime i go to check out one of his videos, there's always 69 thousand hate comments on it.

i'm not sure if just drummers are like that, but it seems like we could appreciate our differences instead of killing babies over them!

My 2 cents - I went in to buy a reasonably budget snare yesterday, and tried out this snare, the 14x5.5 Metalworks and the 14x5.5 Steel Black Panther, and honestly, this snare blew them both away. I'm not a Jordison fan (aside from respecting him for being a great drummer) and I was not going to buy it purely because of the rubbish design, but the sound really impressed me.

thank god someone got in here to say it before me. lmao, but really i went in to the local GC (guitar center) one night with a drummer buddy of mine who owed me a couple gifts. we got the splash (b-day) and the boom clamp on which to mount it (for compeating in drumm-off '07) theny i turned to him and said chanukaha is around the corner and you know one thing on the list is second snare for a cracked out metal main snare/ska side snare. testes out a few. found the sound i was looked for in 3 snares, the pork pie BOB (big black), that dinky 10" pdp side snare, and of coure the pearl joey snare. i went with the joey snare not for looks or because of hype. it was because of the attak delivery that was laking in the other two, happend to be dead on to what i wanted...long azz reply short, the joey snare met everything i was looking for in a snare for my metal band, and exceded some aswell. i didnt give a shyt about the "s" or whatever, yeah they look okay...if i wernt afraid of effing it up, i repaint it to atleast blend in more with my kit. cheeres

I own this snare.

I'm not a metal drummer and im not perticularly a slipknot or jordison fan. I chose this snare because i liked the tight sounds and rebound i got from the drum above any of the others i tried. I'm still fiddling with the tuning on it, but its still by far the best snare i've played in my 3 years of drumming.

It's still a cheap steel drum... Maybe you just LIKE the sound of cheap steel drums?

You could have gotten a drum that was just as good for 80 bucks...

People get all gooey-eyed over the Jordison snare because it looks kinda cool, sounds pretty damn good, and is cheap. I would still have to agree with DRUMSMYWIFE and get a Yamaha Musashi. You get the most bang for your buck with that snare period!! Great tuning range, killer looks, you just gotta change the throwoff cuz it sucks donkey balls

Depth? tuning? nah. its all about crack. CRACK AND ATTACK... lets cut some 4" vents in that thing Smile

when it comes to steel drums (in my limited knowledge) different manufacturers can vary greatly in sound, but ultimately you only get one sweet spot out of any snare Smile
so it just becomes what you like is what you like, stuff everyone else.

I have a black panther steel black chrome jobby, it is loud, great crack, sensitive, and doesnt seem to need miking in any average venue. so it does its job well in a live environment.
I think most medium to high end (for want of a better term) 200quid steel snare would be similar.

But if I wanted fat and meaty I would use something else.

i think anyone who sais joey sucks, actually sucks as a drummer and as a musician. this is an art. who is anyone to say anyone elses music or style sucks. someone who really gets this art appreciates all. grow up and become real musicians, not dickheads who give drummers bad names.

just remember when you say anyone sucks (especially joey who is obviously good because hes in huge band and has his own fucking snare drum) that he can proobably drum circles around you.

I think Joey is a fine drummer... the snare drum that bears his signature is an over-rated el-cheapo piece of junk in drag.

I absolutely guarantee that anybody that knows how to tune a snare drum can make $69.00 ebay chrome plated 6.5 x 14 eight lugger sound just as good if not better.

Yes, I know the Joey drum is a 13", that just makes it cheaper to produce. The Pearl designers applied marketing hype to a second rate drum and lots of people fell for it. It happens all the time.

Steel shelled drums from most manufacturers are the bottom of the line, entry level junk. Don't be fooled by a pretty paint job and a popular artists signature.

o_o
You're buying into the fad man.
Just cause he has a big-arse band and signature stuff doesn't mean he's AMAZING and can own every other drummer out there.
He's an alright drummer, and he works well for Slipknot, but don't go calling us sucky musicians/drummers for having opinions.
That is narrow minded.

*sigh* I won't bother trying to say again how I wasn't saying anyone sucks. Doesn't seem to be doing much good. However, I will point out a couple other things:

1. Just because he's in a huge band doesn't automatically make him brilliant. There have been plenty of really huge bands with really average drummers.

2. The fact he has his own snare drum doesn't mean shit all about his drumming ability. Nuff said there.

3. As for him drumming circles around us, you should probably hear us before you make judgments like that. Yeah, he could school me in metal drumming I'm sure. But this is partially because I have no interest in metal drumming overall and don't play it. I'm certain there are plenty of areas Joey falls short himself.

4. "hah... arogant much?" - Hah... hypocritical much?

5. Eh what the fuck, I'll say it anyway: FOR THE LOVE OF GOD I'M NOT BASHING ANYONE, YOU STUPID PRICK.

6. You've got a lot of bloody nerve calling us dickheads when in your first 5 posts you've pissed off just about everyone else in the forum off. Grow up yourself and stop wasting our time if this is all you're going to do.

Now, anyone here open to an intelligent discussion?

People that buy the snare are usually into metal, therefore they play metal.

Loud cracking snares sound better for metal.

This means, It's generally the right snare for the job.

No-one wants a warm snare for metal, it would sound junk.

I own the joey snare

I'm a huge slipknot fan and joey is my biggest inspiration, but i also know hes not the best drummer in the world!

I bought the snare cos i tried it out in a local drum store, and completely loved the sound of it.

its very sharp and cracky, quick attack!...which is what works well for metal drumming.

So yeah...

Shouldnt buy equipment solely based on who uses it!
