while my band plays 99% original music, we were asked to do a covers set for a weekend of shows a local rock club is having. we were specifically asked by the booker to do a led zeppelin set.
unfortunately, my normal rack tom (either a 12x7 or a 10x7) just wasn't cutting it for that "big" bonham drum sound.
my budget wasn't really going to allow me to build a nice keller tom with the hardware of my normal kit so i picked up an older 13x10 pearl shell on ebay for a whopping $11. i then won a pair of hoops for $10. the only real expense came from the wrap ($35) and the cheapest hardware american drum parts had (that would fit the 2 inch holes already drilled in the shell)
i removed the old crappy black wrap, filled some holes (this was apparently used as a floor tom for some reason) and waited for the contact cement to do it's magic. mapped out the holes for the tom mount (this was a "virgin" shell) and assembled.
not bad for a few hours work and less than a hundred bucks.
