Max Roach
One of the legends. Stunning technique, jaw-dropping phrasing and musicality. Not as much a fan of his later work (when he went to the larger drum sizes and exclusively used matched grip) as his output up through the 60's, but it's all definitely worth checking out.
Here's a vid of his quartet with his wife, Abbey Lincoln, singing. There is an UNREAL drum solo about halfway through.
