I found this old snaredrum in the rehearsalspaces my band practises at, and since I come there all the time and know the guys who work there, they let me have it, because "it sucked pretty bad anyway". Now, I still don't know about the sound, since they kept some hardware off of it for later use. But the thing looked terrible. It had a red glitter wrap on it, which was pretty close to pink, except for around the lugs. So I took the wrap off, which was way too easy, it was practically splintering off the shell. Sanded it down pretty well, and now I'm ready to give it some paint. Here's how it looks now:

So, my question is how to go about it? What paint to use etc. It gotta be totally covered, since the woodgrain on the shell isn't exactly something I'd like to see more of in the future:P

Some extra information:
The shell is some sort of Ludwig knock-off I guess, since it's 3 plies, with reinforcement rings. 6 lugs.
and, I've pretty much given up hope of a good sound out of this thing, so this whole process is more about painting and fixing up the looks:D

sorry to break it to you man, but there's no good way to paint that.

the shell is made of junk wood that was never meant to be finished.

chances are that if you paint it, it's going to ruin the shell.

your best bet is to re-wrap it and throw some better hardware on it.

yeah, I kind of imagined that.. do you think a primer will help? To me buying a new wrap and putting it on there is a bit of a waste of the wrap/money/time, so I don't think I'm gonna do that. Painting just seems like more fun..

use some sanding sealer to seal the grain. prime it and paint it with a few coats. if it loks bad it looks bad. you won't have wasted much money on the thing

you can use automotive bondo to fill in large gaps and it will work well i have used it on a tama rewrap and you wont spend hours trying to fill in the grand canyon with sanding sealer. serously bondo smooth, primer and sand
