am going into the studio and was wondering how to get a great tom sound /place mic on top of tom or on bottom

Usually you just close-mic' the top head from about 1-3" away. You can mic' the bottom head if you want more body to the sound. If you're paying for studio time though, you should trust the engineer.

I had an intersting conversation with John "Bermuda" Schwartz about the sound captured on the song "Cuts Like a Knife" by Bryan Adams. He told me that although he didn't play on that song, the sound was big toms, some muffling, and mics on both the tops and bottoms of the toms! Apparetnly he knew someone who was involved in the recording of the track. - one of my favorite drum sounds! Oh well....it is amazing what you can do when you get to spend someone else's money!
