Depends on the depth of the drum, diameter, heads, playing, mic used, and desired sound. In other words, ya gotta play around with it.

Generally though, closer to the batter will give you more impact and closer to the resonant will give you more tone. You can get increased impact by pointing the mic where the beater makes contact.

You can also use a two mic method as well. I use an Audix D6 just inside the port hole in the front head and then a D1 on a short stand right near where the beaters hit. Both can handle high spl's and the D1 really captures the attack. This way you don't need to over EQ anything to get the right balance between tone/attack. Additionally, the D1 is very directional so bleed through from other drums is not as bad as you'd think.

Hope this helps!

I use a D6 as well. If you position it correctly, you don't need much EQ at all...though EQ does really bring it life.

Post Kick Mic's
I recently spent about a week ( cause I could, no deadline/my project) trying every combination with an
AKG D112 and an Audix D-6 on a Pearl masters custom 22in. I ended up w/ the D112 through the front center hole 6in from point of impact w diaphram at 45 deg. And the D-6 just inside the hole pointing 45 deg ie towards the shell. And mixed the D112 80% and the D-6 25 %.
Too much info I know.
