A lot depends on your budget. If you can easily afford a new cymbal, I'd say go for it.

It would also matter whether or not you are a big time drummer. If you play gigs frequently, you'd probably want them a cymbal as soon as possible. If you just do drumming for a hobby, I'd wait for a while.

I'm not an expert on this stuff, but I hope this helps.

Projection Crashes are heavier weight cymbals.

I've been considering switching back to the old metal Washer and separate sleeve because I think they give a little(rock back and forth) while these Gibraltar plastic sleeves don't.

ouch Shocked I never thought of the difference between the plastic sleeves and metal washers. I might consider the washers for more freedom for the cymbal to breath!

plastic washers will extend the life of your cymbal, i ALWAYS MAKE SURE i have them with me at all times. i never put metal on metal, thats gonna kill them quickly. also zildjian has a year warranty on their cymbals call them.

Do people understand the concept of wear and tear over extended gigging and playing? Ever think that this might have something to do with it?

I agree cymbal angle is a huge factor...it's all about physics and the force of the impact and ability to rebound and how the cymbval disperses the impact energy. Just like a drum the sound should be drawn out, not smashed out of the cymbal. While live players and videos do well to show a drummer beating the crap out of his gear , I can guarantee that when it was recorded in the studio the player didn't smash the shit out of them. Find a good height adjustment that works for you and then adjust the cymbal at a slight angle to compensate for the downward impact of your stick stroke. Every action has an opposite and equal reaction...action...hit to hard/bad angle, reaction...cymbal breaks! If all else fails switch to Z's you won't break em!

Z-Customs are heavier, thus vibrate longer. Doesn't that mean they'll wear out a lot easier?

Take a cymbal... ANY cymbal... I don't care who made it.

Put it on a stand... ANY stand... ANY angle you desire... any washer, felt, cymbal sleeve or spring.

Now, take a drums stick.... But not just any stick. I'd say grab yourself a 7A for example... any wood you choose, nylon or wood tip... doesn't matter.

NOW HIT THE CYMBAL AS HARD AS YOU LIKE.

The cymbal isn't gonna break. If you it it too hard, eventually the stick will break.

NOW... head out to your garage and get yourself a baseball bat.

HIT THAT CYMBAL GOOD AND HARD....

Bye Bye Cymbal!

Do you get my drift here?

Sticks are WAY cheaper than cymbals, and if you're breaking cymbals, go to sticks that will break INSTEAD.

2B's and 5B's are snare drum sticks... originally for orchestral and concert band playing. Back in the day, drumset players used sticks in the "A" range. "S" sticks were for street drums. Yes, you can adjust angles and do glancing blows, and whatever you like to minimize the damage of an over-sized stick... but if you simply got used to sticks that break... and learn how to use them to MINIMIZE on the breakage... you'll save a lot of dough!

Feel free to disagree... I'm happy to go to your house and do the baseball bat demonstration on one of your cymbals so you can see for yourself what I'm talking about! Very Happy

Hmm, I don't own a baseball bat, would an 8 pound sledge hammer work instead?

Not for the purpose of this demonstration... Very Happy

A baseball bat is really, at the heart of the matter a REALLY big drum stick. I was showing the extremes.
