Post New Beats
I wanted to post this because there is always so much controversy over brands and models of equipment.
I don't agree with a lot of the debates and never take part in them because I believe that "it's the carpenter, not the tools" that matter.
I saw Spyro Gyra tonight and I was blown away.
I talked to the drummer afterwards and asked him, "what kind of Hi-Hats were they. He said, "oh, those are an old pair of New Beats." the whole time I was thinking that they were probably Mastersounds. LOL.
It just goes to show ya.
I think Phil Collins used New Beats on all the Genesis recordings before endorsing Sabian.

New Beats are great hats. And I've never liked the sound Mastersound hats.

Love my New Beats!!! I have Z Master sounds also and they don't sound at all bad. All of my recording is done with my NB's though and they sound fantastic. Peace on ya!

"New Beats" have been around for a long time and have undergone many changes over the years. Personally, I prefer the sound of my older 70's NBs to any of the ones Z put out since the 80's. The weights increased too much for my liking, but then again I prefer lighter weight hats. The carpenter/tools analogy does ring true, too.

New Beat hi hats pretty much set the standard for hi hats, in my opinion. They are always very consistent from pair to pair. I don’t know why they get such a bad rap from some drummers; I think it part of some peoples’ mind set that if it isn’t the latest thing, it sucks. I also don’t care too much for the Mastersounds even though I have a pair of K Mastersound hi hats. I had them autographed at the NAMM show one year and I chose them because I don’t use them all that often. Right now, I am in love with my plain K Zildjian hi hats, with my K/Z s following a close second and then my New Beats. And yes, I do feel fortunate to be able to tailor my sound to the gig I am playing.

I don't have New Beats per se, but my 15" A's are close. They have a medium top and a heavy bottom.

The other pair of hats I use are Bosphorous hand-hammered medium waight 14".

i've been playing 15" a cstm mastersounds for a while now, and i also have a set of 14" NBs. after reading this lately here about the beats, i switched them out for a while, and they sounded a lot better than what i remembered. i'm actually glad i still have them around now. but, i do prefer the 15s.

My 14" pair are also from the 1970's, and I've always felt the same way. They're great because they fit so many different musical environments.

I believe the top hat for Mastersounds are actually New Beats and I think I read this on the Ask Zildjian web page. I have 14" New Beats, Quick Beats and an A Custom Mastersound bottom hat that I play with the A New Beat top and it sounds GREAAAT! I do agree that the older New Beats from the 70's and 80's were a little lighter and are good, but I disagree that anything could sound better than Mastersounds. A good drummer can make any professional grade set of hats sound good, but think of how much better they could sound with Mastersounds.
Cool

Touch is highly under-rated.

I have played on 2 year old new beats and 20 year old new beats. The 20 year old new beats i think sound the best becuase they have an older sound. im an older style guy so i crave vintage equipment. The 2 year old new beats sound really bright, it aight bad but its not the sound of the older pair. aside form New Beats, i think that 13 inch K's sound awesome. These hi-hats sound like hi-hats off old jazz recoreding.

I bet you'd like the new Armand series Zidjian's, which are supposed to capture that vintage sound.
