so my band is buying live/recording gear and i wanna know what the difference between the instrument 1/4 imputs and the mic xlr imputs are, because our mixers only supply phantom power to the mic/xlr imputs and all of our mics need phantom and we dont wanna spend money on a preamp if we dont need it

I can't think of anything 1/4 line level that would need it. Phantom power is usually only used to power condenser microphones. I played an Ovation guitar once that could take 9v or phantom power, but had 1/4 and xlr. The difference is in the strength of the signal. Every channel on your mixer has its own mic and or line pre witch sould suffice for now.

The 1/4 inch "line inputs" are for line-level sources.
You would use the XLRs for condenser mics unless you had an external mic pre.
