A drum trigger is a device that picks up the vibrations from the drum it is connected to.
the drum trigger then outputs a small electrical current
this signal (light switch as an example) can be used to "trigger" an event....dependant on the device it is connected to.
you could connect a drum trigger to a sampler, a drum brain, or your computer (would still need a trigger controller that outputs midi).
then...dependant on what device it is this will output whatever to tell it to, when the trigger is activated.
it could be a drum sample, a looped pattern, vocals, other instruments. basically anything.
the output could be a signal to a PA system, or a midi loop to play back later etcetc, it could be recorded to the sampler, or to a computer.
so that is what a trigger is.
applications:
there are many live and recording applications for this type of technology.
you COULD use triggers to replace drum mics.
you COULD use triggers in conjunction with drum mics...i.e. have a real kick mic and a trigger of a kick from another kit/sound library.
you COULD have a kick mic, and a kick trigger that makes the "moooooo" of a cow.
you COULD when in a studio environment record a live signal with mics, and record a trigger signal in midi to allow greater editing/production later on by easily utilising the midi note to control any type of synth/drum software/sample software.
you COULD use a trigger live to START and STOP a prerecorded loop on a sampler. the loop could be as stated before a bass line, guitar riff etc.
