RANKBand.com wrote:It sounds like the Ping Ride is what you want. It's what I use and I've tried about everything -- it is bright and pingy. A dry ride is not bright, just pingy. It doesn't matter much if you get it in A or A Custom because they sound very similar, though I always prefer Custom for the looks. The Custom crash cymbals have a much warmer, smoother sound to me, but I can't really hear much difference in the Custom rides.
By the way...why would you want to crash a ride cymbal?
This annoys me. We have crash cymbals for crashing, we have crash/rides for crash/riding and we have rides for, um riding. Why would you crash a ride? Is this some funky jazz think that people think is cool? If you want to crash your ride then don't get the Ping Ride, get a Medium or Sweet Ride (or just a crash/ride).
awesome. thanks. The reason I want to crash my ride is that when I do so I get a big sound. when I want the song to sound huge and intense and loud and angry I will crash my ride. It gives the song an untamed and exagerated sound that I love. My crashes dont sound big and agresive when I crash on them. Only my ride because it is larger than my 18". If I could afford to get a 20: crash, I would do so, but in the mean time I'd like to have a ride that could produce both sounds for me.
By the way, by "crash my ride" I mean to play on my ride for more than 2 measures hitting the flat edge of the crash w/ the blunt side of my stick rather than tapping on the top of the cymbal with the tip of my stick. idk if you know what I mean but I love it. It's a really "Oh shit" kind of sound

I'm currently using an A Custom 20" Medium ride that I tend to use as a bit of a crash ride on some songs. It's got a loud but nice wash.
It has a nice ping to it too.
Not got any experience with the mentioned rides, sorry!

i have the 20" A custom medium ride, and i also have a Saluda Mist X 20" Ride.
the ride qualities of the 2 cymbals are almost the same, both have a sharp bell and good stick definition. but the mist x sounds better when crashed, and it is light enough to choke without it ringing for days. the a custom still crashes good, but not as good.

The 20 inch a custom ping ride is perfect for any kind of rock in my oppinion. very bright and crystal clear, doesn't ring on as much as the regular a. I feel the regular a ping ride is great for jazz, perfect on a jazz kit.

I have a 20" A Custom Ping and a 22" A Ping Ride on order. I will compare them to the 20" A Ping Ride I'm using (and love) now. I know none of them are good for crashing really because they are too heavy. When I want a big crash I usually hit the 18" crash cymbal or China, both of which I keep next to my Ride.
I mean, I know how to hit the Ride with the shank of the stick and make it ring out, but it just doesn't do anything for me musically. I will switch to a crash/ride if I want a lot of background noise. My current plan is to use a 20" A Custom Medium Crash as a crash/ride...I think that should shimmer pretty nicely.

Okay, I now have the 20" A Custom Ping Ride, 20" Avedis Ping Ride and 22" Avedis Ping ride and have had a chance to play a gig on all three. So the question was, which one is best?
To that my opinion is that I like the Avedis 22" the best, mainly because of its size. Honestly, it's not just the deeper sound of the 22" that I dig, but moreso the way the stick bounces off of it. It is so big and heavy that the stick responds quicker and feels sort of "magnetically repelled" from the cymbal after each tap...very cool! I do like the deeper sound, but it can be annoying sometimes -- like when I want it to stop ringing I have to use TWO hands.
The A Custom has a different sound; it is a little "glassier". I can't say that I like the A Custom better than the Avedis 20" for sure or not. Sometimes I think I prefer the drier sound of the traditional Avedis, other times I think the glassier sound is classier.
All in all when you consider that the A Custom series costs considerably more, I suppose I'd have to recommend the traditional Avedis Ping ride for that reason.
Keep in mind that I am writing about the Ping Ride and don't generalize my statement to "A Customs vs. Avedis". When it comes to crash cymbals I stil prefer the A Custom series, which have a completely different sound than their Avedis counterparts.
