i was tinkin about buyin a rack but im not 100%???
i currently have one tom an a multiclamp and 2 on my bass!

whats ur opinion??

It depends on a few things. How often do you break down/set up? Would a rack be out of place in the band you're in? Are the floor stands getting in the way? If you are going to have just a 5 piece set and you are comfortable with the tom placement, I would keep the set as is. The rack will allow you a few more positioning options but you will give up the convenience of stands and not have to carry around the extra weight of the rack. Plus, there is band image. If you play in a classic rock or jazz or big band, the rack would not be appropiate. I thought about using a rack years ago but my bandmates were against it, saying it made the set look too "industrial" for our folk-rock band and I agreed.

I don't like them for some reason.

that said, if I had a big kit with tons of cymbals I'd probably get one.

I use a Pearl DR-80 rack and have for 9 years and love it.

But, it really just depends on a) the look you yourself are going for b) if you're in a band the look it'll give or take away from the band and c) if it's really necessary. I have anywhere from 9-12 cymbals with 2 rack toms...so it's perfect for me...especially with shows and setup/take down.

yeah, I think how many cymbals you use is a definite consideration.

I use a rack tom and 2 cymbals, a rack would be preposterous.

Well considering the advantages of having a rack, the price is pretty worth it. It's buying more clamps (if needed) that becomes a pain.

having a rack has decreased my set-up/break-down time considerably. it has also made it easier to keep my cymbal/tom placement consistent, but that also has a lot to do with my previous kit

You could totally use that, but that's nearly 3 times as much as the Pearl and Pearl does make better hardware than PDP, but that's all a matter of opinion.

I play a rack kit and a stand kit. Big and little. The little kit is a four piece and has the rack tom and two crashes on one cymbal stand. The big one has three toms 10/12/13 and three cymbals on just the middle piece. I hang my small floor tom (12x14) and two more cymbals (ping ride and a 16" crash) from another section. Everything is marked. I put my big floor 16x16 on the left of the snare and boom a splash from the snare.

I love (LOVE) both set ups. Pearl Icon 3 sided rack. I have three sides but use only two.

I use a Gibraltar rack and have nothing but great things to say about it. One thing that nobody seemed to mention is the fact that you save monstrous amounts of weight for load in/load out since you're not using stands anymore. With my setup, I save about 75-100 pounds in weight since switching to the rack almost 10 years ago. I'll never go back, ever.

I agree with the option of the rack for consistency and ease in load in/out. As far as the visual matter, I think they work in any situation for any genre. I've seen country guys use em, etc.

I have a Gibraltar rack and love it, but I also have a fairly big kit (5 toms, snare, kick, and about 15 cymbals). It saves a lot of time on set up and tear down, and obviously less hardware to haul around when playing shows etc. (no, I don't always bring all my cymbals when playing live).

One issue I have heard about tube racks is possible slippage with toms, but I have never encountered this. My two floor toms are 14" and 16," and neither have ever slipped on me. Once you go rack, you'll never go back!!!

yeah, if I ever expand my kit, I'm def gonna get one, simply to avoid having to place a bunch of toms and cymbals from scratch every single time.

one thing I noticed years ago that kind of steered me away from them was the lack of isolation between mounted pieces. has this been improved, or do they still vibrate a lot?
