i was wondering if tabs are any good?
or should i just go by ear.
if you you think i should use tabs will anyone send me some?

The more you learn, the more you can do, the more versetile you are, the better player you will be.

And that from a guy who cannot read.

On certain songs its easier to use tabs but I think that listening to it and getting tabs is good. Because if you can't hear the one part the tabs will help you.

sometimes i use tabs....it depends. if i play a complicated song, i use the tab to have a general idea of the beat, but if i am playing smth simple, i never use a tab.

Learn to read music.

Tabs can only help you out, ya know? I cant read a single note and I make out just fine. I learned when I took lessons but that was a long long time ago. I play everything by ear and never miss a beat, but thats just me.

Eh, I can't read either. By ear with some help from tabs has always worked for me.

And vice-versa. If you can't read the tab at one part, listening to it will clear it up. I can read, but I prefer to do it by ear first. I'll look at tabs if I can't really hear something or can't seem to figure it out.

all depends on song, but if i do look at tabs i also listen to get the rythem of it-
so its not like robotic.

I find it very important and integral in being versatile and knowing what you're playing better if you can read music. I like to write out my parts on Finale (for my band) and listen to them alone, then listen to them while singing the melodies of the songs and figure out the little things I can change and sometimes big things. Not just for that, but in general, I believe all musicians should at least be able to read music in a general aspect. You don't need to know how to read Danny Carey's parts on ever Tool album, but know enough to realize what you're playing when you do play.

likewise. as much as I wish I could just devote some time to really get into music theory and everything that comes along w/truely "understanding" music I just can't do it.

basically I can listen to a part a few times and play it back w/some practice MUCH better than if you give me the tabs for it.

learn how to read music. it will open up all sorts of possibilities to you.

btw, I don't think this is an "either/or" sort of situation. never limit your possibilities. train your ears as much as your limbs.

Tabs, but with Guitar Pro 5......because it will play through the part for you so you can hear it, play along, slow the tempo, etc. Its really helpful! Plus, you can tab out your original stuff too

Metal Rules!

Try mixing them both. First, you try playing and finding it out using your ear, then if you are stuck in any of the fills or beats, you can go and check for the tabs. I use guitar pro 5 and it's a great program since you can play through the song with its tab.

Occasionally I use tabs. Mostly it's just by ear though. Couldn't read sheet music for drums to save my life, though.
