Hi guys, my question is how do I get my hi-hats loose? I see people play and their hi-hats are swinging around really loosely. For some reason I can't get that, how exactly are they adjusted? The way I tried is loosening the nut on the top cymbal and letting it fall on the bottom, thinking that they could just sway together but this doesn't seem to work. Maybe I'm not hitting them hard enough, but it the strokes look effortless in the videos I've seen. Sorry about the beginner question, I just can't figure it out. Thanks!

dont hit them hard!



you top hat has a metal tube through it with a wingnut on it
that's called your "clutch"
the top of your clutch will have two felts
one on top one on bottom
above the top felt
you should have two screw things
loosen those a lot so they're not pressing on your felt

and their you'll have "loose hats"

Thanks shine for the tip, but I have tried that and it doesn't seem to work. The screw things are far away from the top cymbal to allow for some travel. I took a look at the bottom support for the bottom cymbal and noticed that it is kind of cup shaped which doesn't seem like it would allow for much rocking back and forth?

Loosen you clutch so your hats are closed, then press on the edge to see if you have the free range of movement. If so, it's your playing.

You might be loosening it too much.
Loosen enough to allow the top to move.

set your top cymbal about an inch from the bottom cymbal.

Well, the clutch is loosend so the hats sit on each other, and the screws that allow for travel are loose. When I press on the edge of the hats they slide back and forth on each other but it takes a fair amount of pressure, more than what would be generated by drum sticks. Oh well, I'll figure it out sooner or later, thanks for tips anyhow.

Then your top hat isn't loose enough.

This isn't rocket science nor is it magic, man.

your top hat should'nt be squeezed by the clutch felts and i usualy have my hats a lil moren an 1/8 of an inch apart. provides a descent open hatt sounds like you have something that is keeping your botton hat from moving.

Josh, that exactly it. My bottom hat seems really stiff and doesn't get nice and wobbly. Oh well I give up.

does the cup your bottom cymbal sits on have a li'l screw? is this the screw you were talking about before?

So I'm an idiot, the problem was that I loosened the clutch to let the top hat fall onto the bottom but then I tightened it back up for some strange reason. God I feel stupid, thanks for putting up with me!
