Post craviotto snares anyone?
In my never ending quest for new and different snare drums I am thinking of trying a Craviotto. Anyone have one? Like it...hate it? Are the DW era ones better or worse? Any suggestions are apreciated. Question

Craviottos are great drums, unfortunately they start out at about $1000.00

I have a 5.5" maple unlimited and a custom 6.5" walnut with 30' vintage edge.

Both are awesome snares! The maple one's bright sounding while the walnut one is warm and smokey. Plus, Craviotto has great customer service. Can't go wrong! Smile

i have a 13x6.5 unlimited series. the unlimited is a great option. solid shell drum for 600 bucks. the dw era ones are great, however you will have dw throw offs on them and the unlimited series comes with either dunnett or trick throwoffs which are way better. its my all time favorite drum ive owned and played and i love it to death and i will die with this snare drum unless someone steals it from me

i disagree with your throw off statement, the nickleworks throwoff that came on my dw era craviotto snare is one of the best throwoffs i've ever used, its unbelievably smooth and totally quiet.

yes the nickelworks throw offs are great, nice and smooth and quiet i was speaking however of the standard dw throwoffs the ones they still use today on their snares, most of the dw crav's i have seen in person have the dw throw off which is why i mentioned them in that way. i didnt even take into account that on some of the dw era ones johnny used other throwoff's such as nickelworks

Solid shell my friend means a Snare Drum made out of one piece of wood bent into the shape. Whereas usually wooden Drums are made out of Ply's of wood bent and glued together.

I agree, DW"S achilles heel is their Crap bulky Delta Snare throw's. You couldn't do an Orchestral show with one of those with the Snares clunking on and off like that. I just don't understand it. Rubbish. Make nice Drums though.

Fortunately there is a solution to those DW Throw-offs:

www.dominoretroplate.com

While some have said that Johnny put cheaper material in the DW snare he built, I wouldn't put too much stock into it! Johnny's drums always sound great and you should be able to pick up a used DW /Craviotto for less than you will pay for a new Craviotto snare.

excellent! very nice drums man. all said and done those two snares cost what about 5 or 6 thousand. im sure there in a good home. i've always wanted to play one of those. i have a craviotto unlimited series its an outstanding drum, but 600 year old wood that sounds like fun.
