Post The dreaded IONs - which one for my 11 year-old ??
Most people say don`t go there, I know it`s not sophisticated so don`t wince if you`re using top of the line stuff.....but.....I`m skint and we have wafer thin walls and I still want him to start playing.

1. I`m not sure from the net how many models of these cheap electronic kits there are - there`s no manufacturer`s website and people seem to put in a confusing variety of 1`s and 5`s when describing their model. Anyone know ?

2. Do they come with a hi-hat and one cymbal ? The hi-hat snare in pictures always looks more like cymbal, hi-hat to me.

3. Any totally negative beware type feedback would also be appreciated.

Many Thanks !

Whats your budget? there are so many choices of what you can get out there.

Ok here goes, I take it that your kid is new to drumming?
If so the object of a beginner is to learn muscle memory, to the point where you know longer strain to play.
The ion kits suck, honestly they do, personally I see them as a toy rather than a drum kit. That said, I do realize the drums in the house and loud noise sucks when you the parent is trying to relax from working. If I were you i would go to a drum shop in town see if they have any drum muffles and cymbal muffles, put them on some drums there in the shop and see if you can live with it. If not , then you definately need an electronic kit. Start looking at maybe a simmons or an ODP , yeh they suck too, but at least they have better placement of the drums. use you can find them on ebay for about 2-300 bucks. However if you can deal with the muffles which I recommend then I would look at used drums in your area. The cheapest entry level drum kit is much better then a ion kit.

For $699 you can get a Yamaha DTXPLORER that has several great tools to help your child learn valuable drumming skills(click, groove check, Rhythm Gate). Take a look at the demo video at www.dtxperience.com.

The DTXplorer could definitely work.
It'll last your son so much longer, and there's still resale value if you'll ever need to sell it.
