Post Can anyone explain a one drop?
Hi all, I've scoured the internet for videos of how to play the basic one drop. Can anyone explain it or better yet point me to a good link. Many videos I've seen say to play the bass drum on every 1/4 note, but I know that's wrong hence the "one drop" on 3. Thanks.

Hi,
thats a pretty good website... i've been looking for books and websites about reggae drumming, but never found anything that explains the rhythms as they should...the website that was posted here is pretty good....but one of the few... also on youtube, dont look at how they explain reggae drums ! you will get the wrong ideas!
I decided I'll write my own method for reggae drumming, But my advice is just watch a lot of good reggae drummers, dont think about what they are doing, just try to imitate them and listen to what they play.

Some good reggae drummers i can recommend: Carlton Barrett (The Wailers) - Sly Dunbar (Sly&Robbie) also the drummer from Morgan Heritage Family is very good, i cant remember his name.... check out some dvds and cds !

good luck with it...

One drop is common is reggae. It simply means the bass drum only hits once in the measure

Wow. Reggae drumming is one style that I've always found very difficult to understand.

When I try to play those beats all I feel is useless because I can't execute.

Hahaha. I know that feeling. Laughing

Take the bpm way down to like 40-50 so you can get the mechanics of it working. Then take it up to 60bpm and move up 2bpm a day from there. You have to get the muscle memory before you can relax into it.
