I think of him as one of the trailblazers of heavy rock drumming. I listened to a ton of sabbath as a kid. not on the same level technically as bonham or paice, but he had great feel and was very inventive. Lot of swing to his timekeeping.

His "Rat Salad" solo is classic! As well as his bop licks on "Wicked World"

I saw him in 77 and 78 and he was a wild sweat soaked mass of hair and arms flailing about behind a huge Slingerland kit with two 26" bass drums. Quite a show!

Bill Ward has never gotten the attention that he deserves. Listen to War Pigs, Iron Man, Fairies Wear Boots, etc.
He's still playing that thunderous, blasting style too. I saw Sabbath in 2005 and I couldn't believe that Ward could still handle those beats.

Bill is a little unorthodox in his approach to playing. I watched an interview where he doesn't describe himself as a timekeeper. He says his meter is not all that good and instead of focusing on time what he does is react and improvise around Tony (guitar) and Geezer (Bass)

He's solid and everyone should respect him!

I agree, He's being modest in light of the fact that in his absence. Sabbath has had other great drummers as well. (Cozy Powell, and Vinnie Appice) Both great players but Bill is the pioneer of Sabbath.

One thing Bil Ward is not is "poor"!!!!

Hopefully, he saved most of the dough he made with Sabbath in the 70's!!!!

Actually, I think he snorted most of it Razz

But he's certainly made a successful career out of drumming since then. He's definately a great drummer.
