The snare I have came with my kit, (mapex m birch), Its ok, but it has an odd vibrating, hollow, ringing kind of sound (i can't really explain, but you may know what I'm talking about). Ive tried adjusting the snares tighter and looser but it never sounds as it first used to. I've also tried putting a ring on it, but it doesnt sound to good. Any advice, (new head or snares, or new snare entirely?)
However I have a purple kit, so its hard to find a snare that would match, take a look at my profile, a black one? help please!

I would say if tuning it doesn't make it sould the way you want, try some different heads.
Sounds to me like you don't want so much ring or overtones to it, so try a Evans Genera Dry or HD Dry.
Or any head that has some built in muffing. The battle is just beginning.

kinda but wiv the snares on its more of a metallic ringing, like theres a bit of metal bouncing round in the drum (there isnt though)

umm if you still don't like the after doing the above don't worry about it matching the set a snare is really the only drum that is widely accepted to be different. I personally don't like many lower to intermediately priced set's snares I always use either my yamaha brass or pearl free floater.

Seriously, If the snare drum doesnt sound right after youve messed with it....... and it sounded right before you messed with it..... I think you should spend at least 300 on a new snare, and do the same thing to that you did to this, and see if the results are the same.

I never really 'messed' with it, I just think I played it so much that the head has gotten a bit distorted, and so the sound has changed.

I second the suggestion of Evans Genera Dry and HD Dry heads. I tried them 4 years ago and havn't used any other heads since.

ive got a mapex snare and i know what your talking about. what i did was tighten the crap out of the head and loosend the snare until i got the ring out.
thats my advice. and its worked with every snare i tried it on. (so far its been five or six and all of em widly diffrent)

when you say ring, do you mean the ringing noise or a dampening plastic ring?

buy a coated ambassador from your local drum shop, gc, sam ash, etc. bring your drum and have them put it on for you. Describe the sound youz want and, if they know what they're doing, can tune to your needs. or save up a g and buy a canapus or longo or something. you wont have to ever worry about any "ringing kind of sound" again. option a is probably more budget friendly...

I wouldn't suggest that. I have an M Birch snare too and my HD Dry head goes horrible with it.

i think there is too many variables when you are trying to recommend something like a head, because its different people with different opinions playing different styles with a skin that is tuned differently on a different drum!
