well i know nothing about recording techniques, i just play the drums when they guy on the buttons tells me too...but we both cant get a good sound out of the floor tom. using some cheapo mics (they are drum mics though) and everything weve gotten to sound wonderful, except the floor tom, so we always use just a hint of drummagog to liven things up, anyone else out there have trouble with the floor tom? i have it tuned up good, i just get a plap plap sound though through the mic.......so i guess im just asking what you guys do as far as mic placement. any suggestions?

I tune each lug 1/2turn from where it first starts to grab. (even tension on all lugs)
Then, hit the drum. Depending on the drum, It may sound good already or you may have to increase the tension maybe a 1/4 to an 1/8 turn on every lug until the drum sings or resonates as opposed to a drum that is flappy, flat and has no tone.
Then, you can stay at that pitch or go higher. I like mine as low as it will go but still sing or resonate. When you're at the pitch you want, tap near each lug lightly and make sure they all match in pitch. You may want to put a piece of duct tape near the edge, close to the rim.
If you have die cast hoops, be careful to turn in very small increments so you don't over-tension the head.
I sometimes like to de-tune one lug to get a slight pitch bend.
