 Sabian B8 Series
I just got into playing the drums and I have been using my old Taye beginner 5-Piece Set. The cymbals I have aren't very good and are dented and the edges and wavy and they don't sound to amazing. The heads on the drums are dented too and I'm replacing them with Remo Pinstripes. My hardware is all screwed up too and it's rusty (I don't know how) and the rims and tension rods are nasty looking. In the next year I plan to reconstruct it into a good set. I'm low on cast seeing as I'm only 13-years-old.
Your probably thinking 'Alright I don't care' but I'll get to the point. My first step was to get new cymbals and some stands. I was looking into the Sabian cymbals because my friend recommended them and I found a cheap $230 pack that has 14" B8 Rock Hi-Hats, 16" B8 Rock Crash, 20" B8 Rock Ride, and an 15" AAXplosion Crash. I was looking through the site and saw some comparisons to the Paiste PST5 Series and the Zildjian ZBT Series. Now I'm leaving my decision in the hands of people that seem to know what they're doing.
EDIT: I'm interested in a heavier sounding cymbals for more hard rock, metal, music. I'm leaning more for the Sabians because I've heard the AA and AAX series and they sounded good but I don't know how big the difference is.

If you are replacing all the hardware just save and buy a decent drum set it will be better in the long run. I would take a look at the pearl exports and ya the sabian b8's were my first cymbals and i liked them.

Actually I just got finished comparing which would be cheaper, reconstructing it or just getting a new set. Getting a new set is a gigantic difference of over $500 and since I'm only thirteen years old money isn't easy to get. A whole Pearl set with hardware, good heads, and cymbals would cost me $1,160 and I only have $310 to spend at the moment. Getting all new hoops, tension rods, new bass/tom/snare heads, hardware, new cymbals, new bass pedal, new snare wires (The ones on my snares are being held to the buttplate with a shoelace) would cost $675 which is helluva lot closer to my budget. The drum shells on my Taye set are absolutely fine. Not even a spot of dust inside which is surprising seeing as the hoops were covered in rust, dust, and all kinds of junk.
There is a problem though I can't seem to find a 6-Lug 16'' Hoops for my floor tom and guess what they're the rustiest and most messed up. If someone can help me find one or give me some drum specialist stores that might have some it would be greatly appreciated.

Now i did not say it would be directly cheaper but it is of much better value. Think about it you get your hardware but you still have crap drums that will last you not much longer and will sound like crap. I am sure you can earn 500 more even for a 13year old if you work hard. Think about it you are making all these upgrades to a drum set thats not worth it you may as well put a ferrari engine in a honda.

Yeah I see what your saying. I have a job with my dad that I work and earn about $200 from some big projects and I'm selling out some stuff on eBay which might get me another couple hundred and my dad has been a musician since he was my age and he really wants me to become one to so I think he'll put me on jobs in the summer but now out of my personal life. I guess by the time I save enough money to get a new set I'll be better at the drums and will learn using my crappy set.
Anyway for the cymbals I'm going to go with the B8's because I've heard they're good and it's the best for the money and the package is just what I need. Thanks for your guesses input.

the B8s are great cymbals for learning on and I know plenty of cats who gig with them too. As for refurbishing your current kit or buying a new one. I say do whatever will inspire you to play the most. Being so young, you'll have plenty of time in your life to play on great professional level gear, you'll go through lot's of cymbals, stands, drums, heads, and girls . So don't fret to much about what you're playing on today.

all the stuff your getting is good. I say go ahead. that vx is supposed be a good kit so, go for it. seeing as it costs so much you should buy it in certain order. i think:
KIT FIRST
cymbals
grab arm
cymbal stand
heads
wait, you had already put it in that order. two great midns think alike

The link for the Sabian performance pack says discontinued. The first pack you mentioned was the same one I got when I got my first set. The hi hats and ride are alright. The 16" crash has to be one of the worst sounding cymbals I've ever heard, though. And I love the AAXplosion.

I have a Sabian B8 cymbal pack for sale. I am about to put them on ebay individually, but I'd be happy to sell them all at once for $199, including shipping. They are only a few months old and have no cracks or dents, only some normal stick marks from light use. It sounds perfect for you. They aren't the highest quality, but they are surely better than ZBT's and you get more cymbals in this set than any other out there!
14" HI HATS
20" RIDE
16" CRASH
18" CRASH
10" SPLASH

Ok, this might sound like a joke or whatever but in all seriousness. I had had a friend that actually took steel wool to his B8's and burried them in his backyard for a week and they came out sounding brighter and fuller than when they were brand new... Here is the deal with B8's... They have a protective coating to keep them from rusting because they have a higher tin content then normal cymbals.. BUT the coating also kills a lot of the overall cymbal sound. So yea... Steel wool and dirt.. Make it happen..
PS.. I'm Not responcible for ugly cymbals haha
