I recently noticed a small crack (about 3/4 of an inch) on my beloved 18" Paiste 2002 Crash. I don't want to harm the sound of the cymbal or want the crack to progress any further if it will damage it.

How do I keep the crack from progressing? Or is it ok to let this one be?

The only thing that actually works that stops the crack is cutting a chunk out of it and it will change the sound of the cymbal.

If you don't take the chunk out it's a ticking time bomb before it sounds terrible so I'd start now and cut that chunk out.

I've been having a similar problem. My cymbals are getting old and after a lot of "abuse" two have started cracking. And of course, my local drum shop doesn't cut cymbals. Figures.

Unless you know how to drill a cymbal, I would leave that to professionals. Sometimes you can make the situation worse with the cymbal (if that's possible) if you drill wrong.

I wouldnt dream of cutting up a cymbal myself, I would definately leave it to the pros

Yeah, I go in for my lesson tomorrow, I'll probably bring it in with me and talk to my teacher and the local drum nut that works at my local shop about it.
