 Snare wires
So I can't get my snare to sound decent. I'm pretty sure it's the head i bought for it, but nonetheless, i was curious to know what role greater snare wires play.

More wires mean more response and vice versa.

That's a really dry head. What kind of sound are you trying to get?

I have a 14x5.5 birch snare . I'm trying to get the best sound out of it. I really love the sound of deeper snares like 14x6-8... So i guess anything that might make it sound like that. What would you recommend? Sorry I am a newbie!

I'd get a coated single ply head like an Ambassador, G1, or Aquarian Texture Coated then tune both heads to medium-to-medium tight tension, depending on what works with the drum's shell. It shouldn't be too hard to get a good sound out of that shell, maybe you're actually tuning it too low.

No I actually had a friend tune it for me tight and he mentioned the same thing. Hrm i'll try that. I also forgot to mention that i hit fairly hard, will this affect my choice of # of ply's? What about snare wires?

If you notice, I haven't addressed the number of snare wires you have because that isn't your issue. Your issues are head selection and tuning. Time to read the drum tuning bible.  (it's all over this forum or you can search for it on Google.)
