Post Latin beats
Okay so I've been practicing the son clave and rumba clave lessons from freedrumlessons.com and I'll pat myself on the back a bit here as I've been rockin them out pretty good. I was doing the son clave beat 4 at 150 bpm, I'm pretty stoked about that, couldn't keep it together at 180 though, bass drum became hard to keep straight at that speed. But I was just goofin with them at that speed, I don't think those beats sound very good that fast. I dunno maybe I should practice them that fast. Any who...

...what my problem is is this...great now I know a pretty basic beat. But how do I vary it, and make it cool? What I think I need is some music to listen to that features those kinds of beats.

Anyone got any suggestions on what I can listen to? I was hoping tito peunte would have something, but alas he had a lot of percussion, but not much drum set beats. And I found it difficult trying to transfer all those timbales and congas and all the various wood block type beats on the kit. No clave on a lot of the music either, i thought that weird.

thanks in advance

I would check out some Fusion Music. There's a lot of Latin styles and beats, with some incredible drummers that play them. My favorite is Spyro Gyra. Wish I knew some good latin songs off the top of my head by them, but I don't. Sorry.

I would listen to these songs though:

Night In Tunisa
Brazil
St. Thomas

Check those out. I know they're latin, and I'm not completly familiar with the beats you described, but some latin music can always give ideas.

Robbie Ameen is very cool.
Played with Dave Valentin.
He has a video and book called "Funkifying the Clave"

Check out Chuck Silverman's video too.

Here's one of my favorites...Carlos Vega
