you tell jaime what you want our cymbal to sound like. period. it can be a description of the sound, another cymbal you want to recreate or anything in between.

The more detail that you give to Jamie regarding the sound that you are looking for, the more he'll be able to create what you want. For example:

1. You: "Dude, I want an awesome sounding crash!!"
Jamie: Sends out a standard Saluda Mist-X. Awesome, but not customized.

Not a good idea, because you haven't given Jamie anything to work with.

2. You: "I'm really looking for a nice, full 16" crash, not too much ring. I'd like that with a medium-type of decay, a darker finish. Kind of like an older K Zildjian crash that I used to own. And can I get my band's logo put on that?"

Jamie: Sends you a customized Saluda Diamond 16" Medium Dark Crash complete with an acid-etched band logo that fits what you're looking for perfectly.

The more detail that you give, the closer Jamie can come to what you want.

Dude I want an awesome sounding crash!

Jamie hands you a recording of his favorite crash and sends you on your way.

That you'll need to ask Jamie.

Okay, I'll do my best here for ya.

First, some terms:

Decay: How long the "ring" of the cymbal lasts. Can be referred to as "sustain".
Bright: A cymbal, usually with a brilliant finish, which has a sound that is very cutting and distinct. (Think Zildjian A Custom)
Dark: A cymbal that has a somewhat muted, smoky sound. (Think old Zildjian K's or Sabian HH's.)
Fast: A very thin cymbal with an extremely short decay.
Power/Rock: A heavy, thick cymbal with a long decay. Normally very bright-sounding.
Dry: Usually a ride cymbal, dry is defined by a very prominent "ping" and very few overtones. Think Zildjian's Earth Ride.

Thickness and diameter affect the cymbal in different ways. Generally, thinner cymbals tend to have shorter decays, as the cymbal flexes more, thereby giving the sound a quick exit from the surface of the cymbal. Thicker cymbals tend to have a long decay, as they are not as flexible, therefore the cymbal moves/vibrates much longer than a thin cymbal, and thereby generates more soundwaves.

All of these things can be combined in cymbals to create (literally) an infinite amount of combinations. No cymbal sounds exactly like another, even though they can be the same weight, casting, finish, brand, and series. In other words, you can go to Guitar Center and hit a hundred 16" Zildjian A Medium Crashes. You'll get 100 different sounds.

And that's the beauty of it.

We are working on a section for our site called 'Saluda References' to help everyone understand what cymbal terms mean to Saluda. There are a few ways to define 'Dry' so what does 'dry' mean to Saluda? We have our own definition so we hope to get this section up on our site shortly to better help understand our cymbals and customizing options.

Jamie
