Post Portnoy and Peart, two wankers at the top of their game
Wouldn't it be awesome to have absolutely no talent, zero musicality and virtually nothing in the way of technique, and yet still be on the front cover of Modern Drummer every other month? Way to go Peart and Portnoy. Anyone defending either of them had better be deaf.

Just watched a Mike Portnoy video and he made me angry with his immense shittness. Also I find it funny when people try to defend shitty drummers.

It'd be good to hear some legitimate arguments for them too, I'd be interested to hear the other side.

Can I ask how many millions of albums have you sold?

Post video's of yourself covering a song by either and we'll see who has "absolutely no talent, zero musicality and virtually nothing in the way of technique".

You may not like them, that's your choice, but that post is aimed at starting a riot.

MOD please lock this now.

Yeah, maybe it is. But it's legitimate I think. We should be able to bitch about the industry here if we want, Portnoy is a complete joke, I wouldn't lower myself to covering one of his songs. Peart isn't quite as bad, I just find him very boring.

Typical of who? A guy who likes playing with a bit of feel and creativity? Give me an example of something Mike Portnoy does better than anyone else. What's his signiature sound? Why is he on the cover of Modern Drummer quite frequently while people like Gavin Harrison and Nathaniel Townsley are relatively unknown? I would love for you to prove me wrong about Portnoy, I don't see anything worth taking from him, he has nothing to offer the drumming community in my opinion. He's basically the retarded version of Lars Ulrich with a much bigger drumkit. Have you seen 'Liquid Drum Theater'? It's a total joke.

One of the reasons DML is so popular is that we don't just "bitch" about things. Have an open informative discussion and disagree on occasion, that's fine. You should have asked people what it is about Peart's playing they enjoy so much, or what is it about Portnoy that makes him Perfect for Dreamtheatre. You'd have got a much better response and it might have actually opened you up to a new point of view.

I like Peart and Portnoy for the same reasons, they both come up with really intelligent drum parts.

One suggestion, if you like feel over the technicality, listen to jazz, funk, soul etc not to Progressive Rock.

Well then, let me rephrase it that way.

What is it that people like so much about Peart and Portnoy? I personally think they suck, anyone got a different point of view that they can back up with actual arguments?

I like a blend of the two. GOOD drummers can do it. Peart and Portnoy do not, in my opinion, display examples of good technique or feel.

You don't have an argument yourself...

I like Peart for his ability to create some really interesting parts, I admire him for the time and dedication he puts into his music. He's a perfectonist and knows exactly what he's after and won't settle for less than his best. He comes up with some incredible solo's and when I heard YYZ on Exit Stage Left I was left open jawed at justt how incredible he is. I like Portnoy for the same reasons as well as the fact he's awesome to watch (although I must confess I've never seen either live only on the net).

I have put forward an argument. I said they have virtually no creativity, technical ability or musicality. To be a little more specific, Portnoy basically sticks to slow quarter beats and simplistic, borderline retarded fills, with the occasional flashy fast solo thrown in. Peart pretty much just plays fairly slow single strokes randomly around his overly large drumkit, plus some faster rudimental stuff that anyone who's ever been in drum corp or had any kind of formal drum training could do. His solos are a massive wank, I could play YYZ in my sleep and I'm not even particularly good, that's exactly why I'm not on the cover of Modern Drummer or selling millions of records yet. And neither should they be.

By the way, if that's Peart's best, he really should have packed it in a long time ago and become a PE teacher or something.

If you post a video of yourself playing YYZ solo that well I'll be the first to say "nice one". I can't do it!

A lot of your problem is not the fact you dislike these guys, but the way you put it across. " I personally think they suck", "He's basically the retarded version of Lars Ulrich with a much bigger drumkit", "His solos are a massive wank".

I get that you don't like them and you feel that they're getting recognition beyond what they should. Perhaps in your eyes they don't do anything inspiring. For millions of others they are 2 of the greatest.

Those millions are limiting themselves by looking up to these people. I understand your problem with my tone, but I really do get angry with these fuckers, they have absolutely nothing to offer to the drumming world, yet they've managed to get themselves into a position where they have thousands of fans, all of whom are looking to them for inspiration when they could be looking at people like Steve Gadd or Carter Beauford or Gavin Harrison or Rick Marrotta or Danny Carey. There are a shitload of amazing drummers out there. Those two deserve to be bashing on $200 drum kits in their garages.

I just listened to YYZ, I can honestly say I personally know at least 12 drummers who could have played a more interesting part in that song. Come on, it's pretty basic, there's no real musicianship at all to be heard from Peart and please tell me which bits of it are original or creative.

This thread is a flame war waiting to happen. Lorney, I suggest you find a more genteel way to get your point across. I'm locking this thread.
