Right, this is my first post at this forum
Well first of all I'm just a beginner at drums and I recently purchased the yamaha gigmaker which came with paiste 101's. After a couple weeks I noticed that the rod on the hi hat was soo loose that I could actually wiggle it around. Is this normal?

Anyway, I know that the paiste 101 hi hat cymbals aren't that great but I was trying to get those awesome "chink" sounds when hitting it when it's closed, however I couldn't, I instead got these other sounds that didn't quite hit the spot, and also when I hit the opened hi hat cymbal, I get this annoying "dong" sound. Does this have something to do with my sticks (they're only cheap NOVA wooden tipped 5A's, should I use nylon ones?), or does it have something to do with the angle of the bottom cymbal? or is it just because they are cheap cymbals?

its the cheap cymbals mostly. paiste 101s are brass, not bronze like even zbts or b8s. sonically, they suck as cymbals.

it's the cymbals. try setting their hight/angle so that when you open them their still touching a bit, and also loosen the top cymbal. those two things will help replace the "dong" sound with more of a sizzle. i would think that would help. evenually you'll really need to buy new hats though.

ok that's solved... anyone know anything about the rod issue?

The rod should be screwed in all the way to eliminate some of the movement. Turn it clockwise until it is tight. If it is already screwed in all the way, it could just be a quality issue, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Eventually, if it still bothers you, you can upgrade your gear.
