I have 14" hi-hats, 16", 17", 2 (18"), 20", 21" and want to pick up a set of 12" hats too.
But I would never set that all up. In most cases I set up the hats, 1 crash and a ride. What more do you really need?

I have twice as many cymbals then are being used at any one time.
It's nice to be able to choose the sound you want for the gig.

being a cover band drummer, I play music form several dozens of drummers. All done with 2 crashes, a ride , china and hats. When I was young I used to think it looked "cool" to have a massive set up. Not anymore. Toting that shit around sucks. And besides, it's not the size that matters...it's how you use it

with my old premier set-up i used single bass drum, 3 toms, 2 snares, hats, 3 18" crashes, 20" crash/ride, 22" ride, 8" splash, 12" splash, 12" china splash, and 2 cup chimes. i also had a 14" crash added on there for awhile but i didn't like the way it mixed with my other cymbals. that was in an indie band that had some fusion jazz influence. now i play in a rock band and all i'm using is your basic 4 piece kit with a crash/ride, crash and hats. basically you just need to figure out what you're comfortable using. i always try to keep in mind how complicated my fellow bandmates set-ups are. in this band it's all cords into amps #$#@ switching channels, so i'm keeping my set just as simple. keep playing and you'll figure it out buddy. it took me almost ten years to get my set-up just the way i wanted it.

I currently have 14" hats, 16" crash, 18"china, 20" metal Ride, 10" metal Splash, a 12" metal splash and a16" China, I play a lot of Nirvana songs, but it's nice to have the option the option for different sounds. for example if i'm playing a nirvana song i'll use the china during a fill or solo.

Depends on the style of music you are playing. I play in a punk/rock band and don't really see the need for more than 2 crashes and a ride.

Partly down to not needing any more but also I'm a bit lazy and can't be arsed with the extra hardware and setting up. I do own a splash and a hi-hat tamborine but only used them when playing in a covers band.

Keep it nice n simple!

The more cymbals the better!
