Post Tape On Cymbals???
how come i sometimes see black gaffer tape on the underside of some cymbals, is this for muffling or what?

i first noticed that on the smells like teen spirit film clip! i tried it on my ride, cause experimenting is the fun of cheap stuff and i noticed a general rule that "stick it towards the edge of the bow and it cuts out the low towards the bell and its as low as hell" it wasnt meant to my catchy until i wrote that and realized low rhymed with bow so i felt obliged for it to rhyme. Using that im assuming that most of the low frequencies come from the outer part of the cymbals and visa versa so all ur doing is muting the frequencies emanating from wherever the tape is stuck. It also has a muffling affect which makes it sound less lively. thats what i noticed anyway.

It kills over tones but I rule against using tape. I just don't like the adhesive residue. I recommend using moon-gels for a temp fix to lower over tones. P.O.Y!

You're right about the residue, but gaffers tape doesn't leave any, which is why if you want to use tape instead of moon-gels, it's probably the best option.

Usually this is done in a video shoot so the set stays quieter while filming. I haven't personally ever had a need to quiet or alter the sound of my cymbals. To each their own.

This was done back in the day to give the cymbal a little more definition and tone down some of the ring. Guys live Dave Weckl and Steve smith used it.
