I'm still trying to figure out how anyone could think that changing out a few cymbals is a big hassle or time consuming. No reason to lollygag about it, pull 'em off and put the other set on. Shouldn't take more than two minutes. How long will it take to listen to just one play back? Is multi-tasking an option? What about the hourly break from playing that one should take in the studio? I mean, c'mon now. What gets used on stage means very little to what will make a recording sound its best. Maybe this is why major label drummers often use brands they don't endorse? Perhaps why you'll see a kit setup for a $50,000+ session with five different colors, brands, and mis-matched cymbals? Do what sounds best for the recording, not what feels best for your own "I need to do it my way" ego.

I hate to sidetrack this guy's thread any further, but I thought it was really a coincidence that I came across this kit on Myspace today;
it's a guy's recording kit, and he's got 2 hi-hats set up amongst a pretty big kit. Just thought it was topical, kinda.

And look at the funky angle all of the mic's have to be at. Far from optimal. The tom mic's aren't pointing down at the toms because there isn't enough room.

True, people who do a lot of session work tend to have really big kits, but it also takes them a very long time to get those kits setup in the studio and they're setup to allow for optimal mic'ing techniques. A small tweek here and there makes a huge difference. One of the biggest is changing the "this is how I do it and the only way I'll do it" attitude that so many have. At the professional level, that's a time when a pro gets called in because of the low hassle and quality of finished product.

okay so yes, this is a DIY recording i am talking about here. we aren't necessarily paying by hour and sessions, but we don't have all the time in the world to do it either.

i don't know the best way to explain, we signed with an Indie record label, and he will be using pro equipment, but it is in my jam house, and we will just be doing the best we can to get sounds, such as mattresses and setting up walls and blankets etc. most record contracts, you record and pay them back later, but we aren't doing that. we are personal friends with the guy, and he used to be, well STILL is our Promoter. we have an arrangement worked out, but he owns a construction business, and between all our jobs and schedules, we don't have the most time to work with.

i am talking like 6 hour sessions one day, consisting of rough tracks, individually recording, and we mix it on our own time. it is a slow process, because its like every other weekend, or we individually drive up their on days off.

and i appreciate everyone's advice. by "studio kit", i just meant for general recording.

and i have changed it considerably since then, as well as experimenting with different mics.
