The Canon Powershots are great! We Have 2 that take awesome photo's. The SD400 series is pretty cheap if you want to save money. We have the high end models. P.O.Y!

What ever camera you choose, ignore the pixel chit, buy the one in your price range with the BIGGEST OPTICAL SENSOR. It makes the biggest impact on quality of the shots.

Get a Canon. I shoot with a Canon Rebel XTi and it's more high end than what I think you're looking for (plus it's a DSLR and you sound like you want a point and shoot), but Canon is better than Nikon imo. Less noise in the photos and great quality. Get a nice powershot and be done with it. Go to canon's site and look at what you think suits your fancy, then go to bhphotovideo.com and order off there. Best prices and customer service out there. (unless you have connections with a local camera store, which it doesn't sound like)
