Hey everybody,
I am new to drums(playing drums for one and half years although I have been no formal education or training). I got to this place few days earlier and got amazed.You people can surely help me.
Beats are my passion.It came first when I was 14 or 15,watching Sivamani(great purcussionist from India) in one A.R.Rahman
show.But I did not have any scope to learn or play drums then.I used to play beats on tables or anywhere I could by my
hands only.
Before entering into college,one day I bought a pair of sticks.I used to play with them, not on any drumset but on tables,books,walls...anywhere.I first played drums at the age of 20.Since then I have played in our college programmes
(we have a band),in last month we performed in our college fest and played songs like Reason,Psycho and few bengali
rock songs.
Whenever I get chance,I watch various rock performances,drum solos,etc and try to learn from these. But now all this things are not getting enough for me.I need to learn new things.
You know how I play drums,I listen to the song I would play,sometimes while composing our own song I listen to the tune
and make an idea what kind of beat I should play.
Please tell me what should I do to improve stick-control,speed,variation in roll,etc.

I don't know how to help you because i am new to drums..

first, learn the rudiments. start at a slow tempo. after you master these, drumming will become much easier.

There is no EASY answer to this question unfortunatley but PRACTICE PRACTICE PRACTICE. As what to practice is: RUDIMENTS like tero mentioned, Practice with a METRONOME to make your playing tighter at any tempo, Try playing patterns with each hand and each foot, then feet and hands together.

Welcome to the forum! Stick control comes with time and practice. Learning basic rudiments is key to drumming. You can get some info in our lessons section or check on line for basic rudiments. Also work on stick techniques, matched and traditional grips. Stick around here awhile and I assure you that you will learn a thing or two. The folks here are great and willing to offer their time to help up and coming drummers. Peace on ya!

It's like building a house, start slow with a strong foundation. Get the basics down and everything else gradually falls into place.

As a virtual beginner myself, I can tell you that everyone mentioning rudiments is spot on. Practising just double strokes, triple strokes, paradiddles and combinations of those has helped me immensely, and once you start adding accents to those, your creativity will rocket sky high.

hi buddy, if you want to have a sick control.....let me tell you that you'll suffer a lot and that you need atleast some hard years of parcticing a lot.....

but first of all listen to a lot of music

then practice single strokes, doubles, paraddidles and so foward with a metronome...and watch a lot of drum solos of sickest drummers like : virgil donati, thomas lang , dave weck , vinnie colaiuta, mike portnoy etc...

by te way you have to know that being fast and sick at drums needs a lot of time and they're only a few who reach this point ...

I can't add much more than what the others have said, except, BE PATIENT. When you are learning new things it does not always come quick, it can and will take time.
