he didn't use a snare.
he played that song on the bottom of a beer keg.
seriously though...
i thought i read somewhere that he played with his snares off.
i don't know why anyone would want to replicate that sound though.

The better question is "why?". Everyone's entitled to an opinion, and mine is that that is the worst snare sound I've heard.
By the way, the story I heard was that it was not a beer keg, but, in fact, a Pringles can.

Beer keg, Pringles can... Old Bar-B-Que grill lid... it doesn't matter!
If you whack the Saint Anger snare drum in the woods and there's nobody there to hear it... does it still sound like arse?
I may have to ponder that...

That, my friend, is one profound statement.

yeah, I hated that snare sound it was horible. Actually, I hated that whole albulm. The snare was just ass frosting on the poop cake. It was Almost as bad as this:
I love the Specials but this snare sound was just bad.

I actually think they were duct taped to the bottom head... there's a little bit of a snare sound there

Assback, it's a bad snare sound, but they're playing on a live show at the mercy of a lazy BBC television sound engineer. Back in those days when this was shown they mixed on the bases that watchers would have basic mono televisions, not the HD ready LED sets with full surround sound that we have today. Metallica on the other hand can have whatever they want whenever they want it, so why the Pringle pipe snare?
