I've noticed how nobody has spoken on behalf of the "rest" of the Band. How it affects them. We've been very indulgent on our rights to play what we like, where we like etc, and there's been posters saying set the Amps against the wall. Is that the best for an Amp? Does that effect the sound it makes? For instance would that effect an open back Fender twin?
On the other hand; I know there's areshole's in bands who insist in bringing massive stacks, several Guitars(all laid out on little stands), Multi Keyboard set-ups to these little gigs. And then the singers who insist on room to Dance and perform on top of that. When they do this to you, that's what the Kit of Doom feels like to them. Imagine if that arsehole Band (inc the Drummer) turned up to the Dog and Duck on a Friday night to play to 20-30 pissed up locals in the corner for £150 with enough equipment to fill Glastonbury Mainstage(Coachella for the U.S.) all fighting each other for space. "But I need my 1000 watt Ampeg for the sound!" "I need the Gibson and the Tele and the...." "I can't just bring the Roland!!", oh you precious little Geniuses. Need I go on.
Bands have to get along together to make the best music.

Actually, if you have an open-back speaker cab against the wall, it will change the sound. It will tighten up the sound a bit, give it a little less "air". Whether this would be a good or bad thing is entirely subjective. But most of the time, setting up the amps next to the drummer doesn't necessarily mean the amp's gonna be flush with the wall.

In an unmic'd situation, I think it's important to have the amps set up so the drummer can hear how loud they are and balance volumes with the rest of the band. If the guitar amp's in front of the kick, not only does it completely change the sound, but the drummer can't hear what the guitarist is playing.

Playing a small kit, my only issue as far as space is concerned is that I'm rather tall and need a certain amount of floor space so my arms and legs have room to stretch out.

Next time they ask you to bring a smaller kit, tell them to play two less strings on their guitars. Your stuff is your stuff, and they ought to be damn ECSTATIC about the fact they even have a drummer.

Very good.

I built my kit on a mounted rack after a kit I saw at Disneyland in the French Quarter. Everything clamped on to the pipes, & the kick was mounted to a plate & it made for a nice, 4 piece that was very mobile & easy to set up.

But I found that adding accessories around the rack didn't work, so I scrapped the idea.

Keep what you have. They'll get over it, or you can find some other folks to play with. Cool

Well if it changes the sound then it isn't good. The guy has invested time effort and money into his rig just as we have, and needs to hear it the right way. I wouldn't like to set up so my cymbals against a curtain or a wall they need to ring free. I'm only saying this in a "screw you put your amps against the f-ing wall mate" context of some previous posters. You know how us musicians are paranoid of our sound, or why do we debate at such lengths the sonic virtues between a DW and a Mapex, Vintage or Modern bla bla.
