There are four drummers at my school, 2 of which I know I outrank in chops, one is just as good as me technically, but none of them are very creative. They aren't good at jammin' at all, so I usually get the call for any sort of drumming.

In my high school there were two drummers in the jazz band: Myself, Peter Munn, and the other, Peter Marseglia.
We were both really good, but he was more of the "refined" jazz drummer and I was the "rock" guy, even though I had as much background in jazz as him.
Anyway, he was the more technicaly proficient drummer, since he had been taking lessons since he was four. There was a lot of hype over him because he won a lot of awards. However, I was the one who people always asked to join bands they were starting.

Yes, a lot of the tom work he substitutes for double bass, and he also counts a lot better than all of us. His right hand isn't very quick, but it is still fast enough to fool you into thinking he has two arms.

At my schools' show he played Lateralus and Jambi by Tool. He also played Hourglass by LoG along with Beyond The Dark Sun by Wintersun, he's a really nice guy and gave me some double bass tips too.

There were always a couple of guys at our school people would rave about because they were good. I never got a look in, partly because I was too scared of being mocked to put myself out there. I had a few issues with being picked on at school.

The other day Pap, the guy most people considered to be the best, sent me a message to say how much he liked my bands tunes and how good my playing was. THAT was one hell of a feeling!

Even though it really bears no effect on my playing and what I'm doing now, all those feeling of doubt and fear from so many years ago we're brought forward and then destroyed in one foul swoop!

Ha, come to think of it..i was the "high-school drummer"...since i was the only one that could half ass play the kit haha. When i was in junior high, i just listned to the guy in high school drum. And i just memorized it by ear. Then he graduated and it was all on me when i got to high school. I just played it how i heard it, i had no idea what i was doing, but i kept the beat and attempted fills. But everyone thought i was good..so o well. Now im in college..and we have 3 drummers..1 of them has the faster metal style, and of course, everyone thinks he is good. Honestly, he is pretty good, but nothing spectacular. Then the other guy..just..plain sucks. Our jazz teacher..calls him the "funk-master" mainly just to try to keep him in the band. It was our jazz teachers first year..and i didint play the set in jazz last semester..so he never thought of me as a set player. Till i played, and impressed him. Not trying to sound cocky, but i just played how i thought it should be played. Nothing flashy, just a nice beat, fills that complimented the song, and actually stayed on beat. Lots of people only hear what the drummer plays..they dont pay attention to what one doesnt play.

There seems to be (both in this thread and my real-life expirience) some animosity between the drumline kids and drumset players.

It's weird; they're all drummers, and yet they often belittle the other's instrument of choice and constanly talk shit.

I was the oldest drummer at my high school and got alot of the 'praise' even though i'd only been playing 6 months at the time. They used to invite on music residentials to teach new drummers the basics.

One of the 'music-men' kids who used to try and play every instrument once tried to challenge me to a drum solo on it, but i just refused. Drumming isnt a competition everyone is better at different things.

So here comes the older guy’s opinion and story – pass the no doze please! I think that this happens in every high school like this means something or there’s a trophy and an AP poll with voting every week. What the real loss is that there are times when I wish that I could go back and re-experience some of what these guys played just so I could see what I could learn from them! That’s the REAL thing – what you can possibly learn from each and take it and make it you own. Some of these guys could play some good solos and had some creativity. One guy was always talking about the rock beats he was learning like “My Sharona” or “Don’t Stop Believin’” – this guy actually went on to play for the Flaming Lips for a while, and he was a better talent than their music belies.

Leave the popularity contest to the rest of the crowd is what I say – learn from those other guys while you can. And most of the time that was what it was – a popularity contest! It’s like saying that Lonnie Wilson is a no talent because he played on so many country songs. Ever wonder why?

I eventually ended up at a college where I was pretty much it as far as a set player. All my growth was out of whatever interested me which can be a bit myopic. But it would have been better to have someone else around to help sharpen my skills in my opinion.

Yup, and he didnt listen when we asked him to, he was a prick, a jerk and had no respect for anyone or those in the music side of things- he dropped out of school and never got any better...he was a kick ass drummer with loads of talent and private lessons provided by the school and he wasted it all.

No idea where he is now. Gas station last I knew. Too bad.
