thank you for the Avice. I never wold ever think someone was just giving me garble. Ill take any advice, lessons or not. I actually know the technique you mention, I have never added it to my routine! Thatsa a great idea. That Syncopation book it awesome. Page 34 Ill look at. Are you saying to work that page with one hand? Or both hands?

I definatly know how to write in counts. 6 years of music theoryu must have taught me something..... I hope. I wonder if I brought that book with me tonight. I work 8 hours with nothing really to do...so metronome and practice pad 3 nights a week!!!

Do the hand patterns alternating, or with your weak hand only. The easiest thing is just to do them with your strong hand, which is not the point.

I think it's page 34 anyway.. In any event, if you've had music theory, then I'm sure you can fill in the counts for the whole book no problem.

I just got my last cymbal Tuesday! Bosphorus Trash Crash, mmmmmmmm.. I love cymbals.

Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone is one of the single most important drum method books ever. It's mind-blowing when you start to realize that it contains pretty much every possible linear sticking combination you will ever use. And that's just in the first few pages.

I need ot look that up on the Amazon....word. I like working on my stick stuff. The army loves a drummer with chops. I work with a Marine drummer...He is insane. I think he was programmed to dump all memory and only take in drums...oh yeah, and shoot your ass at 500 yards.

It's from maybe 1935 originally. Just make sure to get the one with the "colonial drummer" on the front. I doubt any content is different if there's 2 versions. If anything, the layout has changed a little bit. Mine has a grey cover.

When I do exercises from Stick Control, I do it like this:

Hands: R L R L R L R L R L R L R L R L

Feet: R L R L

That's just the first exercise but the idea is to use your feet to mark time. The book makes no mention of this, by the way, but it's basically 16th notes over quarter notes. I do the exercises 20 times, then run my feet once through - R L R L, same timing, then move on to the next one, so it's like 20 times through, then once through, just feet, giving your hands a moment to rest and ready for the next sticking. This ought to all make sense.. If it doesn't, let me know.

If that's too easy, you could also play the patterns from the book with your feet. I do that as well sometimes, but am not very good at it whilst running my hands yet.

Those foot hits are supposed to line up with hits 1, 5, 9 and 13 on the hands, but it doesn't look like that in the post. Sorry about that, but I'm sure you know what I'm getting at.

Roger that. I get hwat you are saying. I have actually tried playing hand patterns with the feet...work great, sounds funny with bass and HH.

I found that book with the colonial guy on the front. Ill proly pick it up next pay check.

I just got 4 pages of Kinka (rithems) (god I hate that word... I can never spell it) and those are awesome. Does any one know what Im talking about? I posted awhile back asking if anyone had copies of them....I got no word from anyone...except myself...

If I were solid enough on it, I'd make a short video lesson of my teacher's Mozambique Mambo groove. I love practicing 4-way beats, so so much fun

Ted Reed Syncopation is a brilliant book! It looks simpler than it really is. You can apply the 8 pages of syncopation to jazz independence as taught by Alan Dawson. Use his system and you are armed with real authentic Bop chops. In fact the whole book can be Rhythmically transferred to the Drumkit under all sorts of ostinato's and displacement(around toms and things).

I wouldn't worry to much about mastering EVERYTHING, just get the basics down really well first. Muller, rudiments, and good technique that will alow you to play for many years. Then learn things as you need them. When you can't pull something off, find or create an exercise that helps you get it.
