Thanks for the comments guys. We're planning to get together tomorrow (today now I guess) to do some initial recordings, so I'll try to have those up tomorrow night Twisted Evil

If you mean the electronic pads, the left one can be hard to catch as part of a fill. I typically only use them for patterns with congas and such.

I love the Max Stax. I did the same thing as everyone else and try to make my own out of Wuhans and cheaper Sabians, but nothing compares to the actual thing!

Haha, actually it looks farther away in the pictures than it really is. But I do like it a little farther away than most. I like to do a lot of two-handed snare/hi-hat patterns, so I get my arms tangled if it is any closer Shocked

I actually haven't. The plan is to use the Alesis interface with my laptop and use Battery 3 for controls.

The Pearl shells are actually about 7 or 8 years old. I bought them barely used. I was looking around for an 8" tom for a while, and apparently they haven't made the blue mist finish in a few years. I like the lava red though, it would probably be my pick if I was getting a new set. Go figure, drummers always want the finish they don't have.

killer set up. Damn, I want my set to look almost like that. the color is sweet. I think of how many things I could do with all of those sounds! :::sniffle::: why cant I have a sweet set? Crying or Very sad

hey try to place the bass mic in the drum about 3-4 inches from the beater you will have a more focused tone then having out side the drum. Another thing is if you have the means of making one do this: Reverse wire a bass amp speaker as a microphone and place it in front of the reso this will give you an amazing lowend tone and with the beta in the drum you will still have the attack.

I've had good luck getting the tone I like as long as I point the Beta where the beaters hit. I'll try to mic it that way when I record tomorrow to see how it sounds though. That's interesting about the bass amp, I'll have to look into doing that. I don't exactly understand where you are saying to put it though. Thanks for the tips!

I was going to say the same thing about the kick mic' placement. Put it inside the drum anywhere from 3-4" away from the impact zone to about half way between the two heads.

You also need to add some compression to your kick because it doesn't cut through at all.

i was going to say that dose! definitely try a different mic position on the bass drum! another idea which is worth a go is to place any kind of cheap mic outside the bass drum on the side u hit with the beater which gives u a slap to it, but u definitely need more generally bassiness to it aswell, i think without that it is going to sound very empty and makes you sound like worse at drums than u are.

Like I said guys, I didn't mix it at all. Heck, I didn't even listen to it because I was on a plane less than 2 hours after I recorded that Shocked. I just got back, but I wanted to post a sample before I left for you guys since I said I would. After listening to it, there's a lot more wrong than just the bass drum not cutting at all. The tempo is waaaaay too slow (blame the guitarist for that though) and that was a really bad take by me. We'll get it fixed and upload a new one tomorrow hopefully Very Happy

Oh, and no close mic'ing on the toms--just the four mics. I'm going to quiet down the cymbals a little and bring up the bass and toms with EQ'ing

Another helpful tip. If you aren't going to close mic' your toms, you'll want to bring down the volume you play your cymbals at and increase the volume you play your toms at. That will make them sound more full in the mix.

Don't adopt the "fix it in the mix" philosophy. Mixing, like makeup, should be used to enhance what's already there, not turn a scarecrow into a prom queen. Smile

what he said. it's much easier to make cymbals louder than to try and carve a solid drum sound out of a track that is dominated by cymbals.

Thanks for the tips guys! It's odd that there isn't more information out on the internet like that to help home recording. I guess it is just now really becoming possible, expense-wise. I'm literally about to start recording, so hopefully I'll have a better clip to upload in a few hours.

Thanks! I have it running through Battery 3 so I can make them moo like a cow if I want, but I've mostly just used it to do some of the western sounding drums Danny Carey likes to use because we cover a few Tool songs. I'm going to start a side project doing Mr. Bungle type music, so I'll be playing a lot of goofy electronic stuff Shocked
