Post cannot tune my 16 inch tom right
I have a Remo Ambassador coated for my batter head and Ebony Ambasador for my resonant. I cannot seem to get the drum to tune right. Every time I mess with it I think its in tune and them when I play it it makes a very faint nasty ring. Its not very loud but I don't like it at all. I was wondering if anyone had any tips?

I like to tune mine As low as it will go (JAW)
Even tension (start with a 1/2 turn on each lug)
With that head, you might want to use a piece of Duct tape or a zero ring.
Depends on what you like to hear.

yeah I use some dampening gels. it seems like it really close to being in tune but there is just a slight nasty noise when I hit it.

hey, you know what? I had this same problem (and it irks me as well) so I tried using nylon washers and it helped alot. You can get a 12 pack of Pearls for 5 bucks. Its worth a shot. Plus, master your tuning. Its a ritual for me now, stretch the head by holding a t-shirt or cloth and applying pressure to the center of the head. You might hear it crackle a little bit but I think if you get your head "set" on the bearing edges more, it might also help you. Try everything! see what works.
Good luck.

16" floor toms are notoriously a bitch to tune. IDK why, it just is.

EDIT: Try to get it in tune with itself, if it still has a horrible overtone, than you're going to have to resort to a moongel.

i cant tune my 12" tom. absolutely hate it. tried different heads but they all do the same. it doesnt seem to have its own natural tuning range like drums always do. it just seems to sound flat and has a horrible ring. all my other toms sound awsum tho lol Laughing

I had the same problem with my 13" tom. always sounded like shit compared to the other ones...so simple solution, I just don't use it anymore and have been happy with my 12" and 16" setup.

ive never had this problem, since i read the drum tuning bible that is.

it sounds like your tuning it too tight.

my 16" is like one turn and the lugs on my 14" are so loose that sometimes they come loose and rattle around after playing

By the way, check your bearing edges if you just CAN'T tune the damn thing.

I found that my 16" floor tom had really bad bearing edges on the reso side after I checked it, because I could never get a real tone, or even good sound out of it.
