cutting a hole in the bass resonant head
the band I am in is about to record a demo cd and I was wondering if they was a simple way to get a clean good looking hole cut in the bass head

Man, this question gets asked every week. I'm going to have to make a sticky for it since people don't look for the answer.
Aquarian PortHoles or Remo DynamOs. Stick one on the head and use a razor blade to cut around the inside of the circle.

Problem solved perfectly:

This will do a perfect circle, and you don't have to worry about your head splitting/splintering from a bad cut.

You're still going to want to use one of the templates to prevent the head from splitting post-cut. It honestly doesn't happen often, but it does happen and I feel that $5 is cheap insurance with a $30 head. For instance, my port hole gets hit and actually dented with a mic by hurried engineers on a regular basis. It just takes a few of those good shots to start a small tear that will turn into a large tear as the drum is played. The template adds the extra strength to keep this from happening. Which is also why the big three head companies include them with their resonant heads that aren't pre-cut.

Yeah, you can split the head post-cut just by sticking something into your kick too hurriedly through the port hole.
So, a good investment is a hole-cutter, and a few of those Holz things.

I just buy em with the hole pre-cut, if I have a hole in it at all. I never had a bass drum reso with a hole until about a year ago.

My first port hole I cut I used a template and then covered the edge with electrical tape. Now on the newer head I have a Holz.

im going to expand on this and ask if placement will factor in the sound you get. as well as the size of the hole and if you make multiple holes?
