I remember my friend had Remo Pinstripes on his toms, and without his studio rings, they sounded more resonant, and more full. However, with my Coated Remo Ambassadors, without studio rings, my toms sound like crap.

Do two-ply heads end the use of studio rings/moongels?

It depends on the kind of sound you want. The type of head, shell, bearing edge, dimension, angle at which it's hit, and things like o-rings, moongels, tape, etc. are going to have an effect on the sound of a drum. If a 2 ply head gives you the sound you want without moongels, then the answer to your question is yes. If it doesn't, then it's no.

Hell no, but really depends on the musical situation because you want to hear your toms over lud distortion so you want the best possible resonance but then you want it EQ'd in the studio!

Each situation is different. You have to figure out the exact combination of heads, tuning, and muffling for each situation/environment. Your drums sound has to be radically different live, than what they sound like in the studio.

It's just the nature of the beast.
