Hey

I'm in a dilemma with my snare right now, stuck between the Evans Genera Dry (suppresses ring yet still open and sensitive, yet not durable enough for my playing) and Evans Genera HD Dry (suppresses ring, very durable, but kills the response too much). When I went to guitar center, the guy suggested that I get the HD Dry and buy a thinner bottom head (he suggested the paper thin Remo Diplomat) that it will make up for the thickness of the top head and give me have that sensitivity that I get with the regular Genera dry. Does anyone do this? That is, use a thick top head and a thin bottom head for their snare? I just wanted to get a second opinion from you guys before spending $15 on a new bottom head that wont solve the problem.

My snare is a Gretsch Maple free floating, with a gretch stock snare side head. Very ringy when it has anything other than an Evans Dry head on it. I feel like I'm limited to those two heads, any other suggestions?

I use an emperor on top and either an ambassador or diplomat on the bottom.

i rock an ambassador on top and either an ambassador or diplomat on the bottom. there are 2 total ply's of plastic on my snare drums. you can really help your cause by experimenting with moongels and small pieces of tape. you can put any head on a drum and place moongels in strategic spots around the rim of the drum all of which will change the amount of ring. they are cheap and worth it if your worried abut the ring. worst case is you lose 8 dollars, best case is you found a permanent solution for ringy snare drums

I've tried the HD Dry for the same reasons and had the same result. Can't say I ever tried using a different bottom head with the HD, might be worth a try. I think
your gonna end up going back to the Genera Dry and just doing what I do, buy two at a time and replace it regularly. Every 3 to 6 sixs weeks for me.

Your bottom snare head should be as thin as possible for maximum snare-wire response. I use a Aquarian Classic Clear Snare Bottom on each of my snares. My second choice would be a Remo Diplomat snare-side. Never been too impressed with any Evans heads. My top heads usually are Texture Coated or Modern Vintage.
Maybe it's ignorance on my part, but I don't think a very thin bottom head will make much of a difference regarding balancing-out the thickness of your top head.

hd dry sounds amazing on my friends pork pie snare.

i rock the CS....little bit of muting, but still one ply, so you get alot of crack and resonance

Take the HD dry that you already have and very carefully cut off the strip on the bottom of the head. Be careful not to get into the other plies. This will turn it into the SD dry that is still plenty dry but has a little sustain. Put the hazy 300 on the bottom and it should be money. Don't worry too much about ring, when played with the rest of a set or with a band it just translates into the snare sounding fuller. They won't hear the ring from out front.

I get a very balanced sound using ambassador over ambassador on my snares. As long as you hit the center of the head the ringy-ness is not there, closer to the edge and you get high overtones and resonance. I also use higher tunning even if I want a lower sound, over shot your goal and it will sound deeper in a musical setting.

Hey thanks for all the great Ideas. I currently still have just the HD Dry on there with the stock head on the bottom. I'm thinking about going back to the Genera Dry like Scrogs said or maybe trying a different head on the bottom eventually, but for now I think I'm gonna stick it out with this setup and see how it goes. So far had one gig with it and it didn't totally disappoint me, and in case anyone is wondering what I'm working with, here is a video a friend taped from the show. I put the HD Dry on about an hour before playing, so it's pretty fresh and I didn't get to mess with the tuning too much...anyway let me know what you think...

Yeah, I know the sound quality in the video sucks, but if you have good ears I guess you can still make an assessment about the snare tone. I'm interested in your opinions Thanks

i suggest not buying the genera dry head. i had it on one of my snares a while ago. I had it for about 2 months and out of nowhere it just split when i was playing and i dont play hard at all. it may have been a defective head, but i didnt like it very much
