Post pearl referance
i was at the local music store yesterday checking out some stuff and i saw this new referance model snare sittin out, i played on it a little, sounded good, sounded really good actually, then i turned it over to take a look inside, this thing has 20 ply's of maple and birch and mohogany and who knows what else, the rim is over and inch think! heavy sucker too. but it did sound pretty sweet, for 650 bucks. eh.

I have an old Masterworks snare which has a shell built like a Castle wall. I love it, it's very rich warm sounding drum.

thats what the reference series are. they depending on the size of the shell they take wood that has characteristics of a "dark" or "bright" sound and use it to make the drum. example: the kick drums and larger toms will have african mahogany as well as maple, where as the smaller toms will have birch and maple. check it out

i love pearl drums, ive heard a lot of drummers dissing their higher quality drums just cause the only pearl kit they've ever played on was a crappy export kit. i have a 10x6 pearl maple popcorn snare and i love it. cant go wrong with pearl if u ask me.

I love my Masterworks snare. Very thick shelled but just awesome to play. A real beauty!

Ahem, I am one of those "crappy export kit" players, but I LOVE my Exports. Obviously I would love to have a set of References or Masters... but the Exports are just dandy for me. A lot of people diss Exports simply because they are affordable and so many people have them. But they are actually GREAT drums, especially for the money.

I had a Reference kit (not the Snare). I've said it before on DML, but the Bass Drums (22 and 1Cool were the biggest disappointment, they both just made a clack sound. The Toms were ok(though not amazing) and the Hardware although a bit heavy was bomb proof. Actually in reality I would say that kit was crap and if that's how they make them then I don't understand the appeal.

I owned a Masterworks kit before(inc the Snare I posted on above) which I loved, although I often used to get strange frequency problems with the Bass Drum when a mic was waved at it.

I now run with DW's, and whatever the debate regarding the DW sound, at least those Kik's have presence, warmth and an unmistakable all round arse shaking thump that records well.

BUT before you all burn me alive, that Masterworks snare of mine is so lovely I would take it out to a session well before the DW snares!!!
