Any body ever used a Trick snare throw-off? Hard to install? I was thinking about buying one

Most of my snares have the Trick Throwoff retro-fitted.

It's the best throw-off I've ever had the pleasure of using. The EGO throwoff looks great, but I have not tried one.

The Trick throw-off is the throw-off of the future. Think about this; the throw-off and snare wires are what makes the snare drum unique and in the past fifty years, not much has changed in the one thing that make the snare drum work. Along comes Trick and out of necessity, develops something which has never been seen before. Moreso, it is extremely durable, pretty lightweight. I sell a lot of the Trick conversion kits and none have ever come back and I have had no complaints.

Every other throw-off on the market is pretty much old technology and why would Ludwig or Pearl change at this point; they are still making money off their own proprietary designs.


Trick really broke the mold on this one.

im looking on their website and it seems pretty "snazzy" but what makes it so revolutionary other than being of higher quality and better designed? it still does pretty much the same thing doesn't it?

Unless you are either talking about the multi-step or have a technique that I am not aware of, I have found that this is the case. What makethe TRick (Nickel) is that they are a more modern design whereas the DW throw-off is the old Gladstone design which is at least fifty years old. Just last night, I was playing on one of my DW snares which I retroplated three years ago with a Nickelworks throw-off in the exact same venue as three years ago. It just amazed me how much of a difference these throw-offs make and this is due to their being more adjustable (?) in their design. And just as a sidenote, those DW throw-offs are why you see so many DW snares for sale on Ebay and craigslist; the factory throw-off doesn't have the senstivity that these modern models offer.

Trick throws for me are ugly as sin, but boy they're the smoothest of all on the market.

BUT, with a retro-plate they will fit damn near anything without alteration of the drum... see Skitch about that.

I personally like the 4 position Tricks myself. REALLY useful!

Why do they make Nickel works strainers out of Plastic??? I thought Nickel works would be word play on Metalwork. Anyway NW's look the part but I've heard about them breaking a few times. If they made them stronger I would have bought them over the Tricks.

Anyone know if Mapex throw-off's are the same hole-spacing as Ludwig P-85's?

Because it looks like Mapex ripped off the P-85 for their throw-off design.

That sounds ace! My Supraphonic snare has a really worn throw. I'm just getting used to the MM snare PJ made me which has a Trick throw. I have to say, LOVING it!

I did a session yesterday and used the studio snare, it was a lovely deep Brass Premier snare fitted with a black Nickelworks throw(it sounded great so I used it all day for all the tunes). So with this thread in mind I put it through it's paces, and I must concur that it worked beautifully. Zen I think your being just a little harsh with calling it "Junk" and "crap", it certainly isn't that by a mile. Yes I can agree that the Trick has it with anal smoothness, but the NW's look the part and do the job basically as well(never worried me for the entire session). It's preference I guess, I have ordered 3 tricks for my 3 DW snares (DW Delta throws....... now thats what I call crap and junk!!!!!!!!!!!!) and I really now kind of prefer the NW's now seeing them and using them.
