Aquarian: Response 2 or Performace II?
I need new heads for my toms and snare. I play Heavy/Thrash Metal on drums daily.
I want Aquarian heads because: 1) I want to try something new 2) I heard many good things about them.
For my toms; which heads better suit me? Response II or Performance II heads?
For my bass drum; idk? any ideas?
For my snare drum; I was planning on this. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Remo-Coated-Controlled-Sound-Reverse-Dot-Snare-Head?sku=442500
What do you think?
Thanks

Do you want your drums to resonate or sound like tuned cardboard boxes?

I play coated Response 2 heads and have also used Performance II heads. The PII heads are more like classic rock heads because they're very dead sounding.

Only if you have your own mic's.

I have used both. I love Aquarian. The erformance II's are designed for LOOSE tuning. It tells you on their website. It will give you alot of low end BUT I find trying to achieve another sound besides that won't happen. You can tune them up and they won't sound right. They are designed for one specific sound. Now the Response II's will give you a larger variety of sounds. You can tune them for a low end tone AND also tune them higher for a great sound. So having used both I recommend the Response II's for projection purposes (especially if you don't mic the drums)

So the response 2 can do low end too right? Cause I like that low end sound with not much overtone. I think I'd just get these tune em low and slap on some moongels

You can tune any drum head low. Don't forget how important the tuning of your resonant head is going to be.

Hey cjdubya17, I have performance 2's and they give the most low end sound i've ever heard with hardly any overtone. I recomend performance 2's but thats just my oppinion. Try them out they're super cheap

For metal, I would have to agree with these recommendations. As others have said, the Performance IIs have an amazing sound for a floor tom, or a deep sounding rack tom. If, however, you want a higher tom sound, I would steer clear from them. If you are doing like 8" or 10" rack toms, the Performance IIs will probably deaden the sound a lot. So, pretty much, if you're playing on like a 7-Piece, I would use Performance IIs on the floor toms, and something else on the rack toms. If you are just playing a 4-Piece, it depends on how much low end you want on the rack tom.

I've been looking at those Super 2's with the studio-x ring, anyone use those?
