Ive used a bunch of models- Vic Firth 5A, 5B, X5Bs, Vater Power 5A with nylon and wood tips. Now I've switched to Vaters New Orleans Jazz 16 inches in leght and .555 thick with a nylon tip. For more of a jazz-type setting (or when I need a woody sound on my cymbals) I use sticks made by a Polish manufacturer OSCA 4 Drums, Fusion model- similar to diameter to the Vater ones, but with a tiny wood tip and made out of a lighter wood.
The reason why I switched from a thick Power 5A/VF XB5N to a lighter stick is that:
- they feel great- especially those Vater ones. For me it's just laying back or playing very fast effortlesly
- I can have a bright nylon tip sound without putting much weight on cymbals (and with a lighter stick you have more dynamic range to play with a nylon tip)
- I have single ply on all my drums so I get a full sound with a light stick. If I had thicker heads, I'd probably have to use thicker sticks to compensate (playing harder to get the sound out of the drum is a waste of energy ).
So for me- Vater New Orleans Jazz nylon and OSCA4 Drums Fusion

My sticks that i love and work for me the best is the Vater Stewart Copeland model. It has the perfect weight and feel and they last pretty good for me too!!

Vater 5B for the rock drummer with a light touch. Zildjian 5B was my chosen brand for a while but i would constantly break them and i was recommended Vater that do last a bit longer. If your not to bothered about weight and you just want to hammer then 2B in most brands will last. If anyone is instrested in some very light and thin sticks for jazz preferably then i would recommend the Steve Gadd Zildjian signature, they look cool and are practically weightless.

I used Vater Fusions on our last tour, they held up really well.
Thinking about switching to Silverfox Rock Steadys, they feel really good too.

Fusions are really sweet - they have that great small round tip, but they're a little bit to thick for me so I only use them for warm-up

I love my training Vic Firth Dom Famularos, they're big and light at the same time. Try them out!

I just tried some Regal Tip Chester Thompsons, to see what the 17" length felt like-

wow. These are some crappy sticks. The finished is horrible, there are big grain chips in it, feels really bad to grip. One stick isn't even round, it's got a flat side! Bad~
anybody ever gotten a flawed pair like that?

No more buying sticks online for me, I guess...

and from what I could tell, 17" felt very strange!

VATER 5B WOOD TIPS. WOOD TIPS ARE "THE BEST" YOU CAN QUOTE ME ON THAT! (I BREAK NYLON TIPS). BUT I TRIED THE VATER POWER 5B WOOD TIP, THEY'RE A LITTLE LONGER AND THE TIP IS ROUNDED A LITTLE MORE THAN THE ACORN TIP OF THE 5B. I THINK I'M GONNA SWITCH. BUT ITS VATER ALL THE WAY.

I also prefer wood tips to nylon tips. The cymbal sound is ten times better with wood tips. And the feel, in my opinion, is a bit different.

Pro-Mark TX707 Nylon tips. Perfect size for me, I wrap them with baseball bat tape and use drum gloves to protect my hands.

BTW, there is no "better than", as in "wood tips are better than nylon". It's all subjective to individual needs and preferences. I prefer nylon, because I get a brighter sound on my cymbals, and I hate it when wood tips split. Just my preference. Nothing wrong with wood tips, I just prefer nylon.

Vater - Chad smith funk blasters

I currently really like the feel of the Vic Firth Buddy Rich sticks. I've been using those sticks alot lately.

I use Trueline 2B nylon tip with Unigrips.

Personally Silverfox always appealed to me and worked.Matter of fact I just recently became an Affiliate of their company. I use the SF-MR MODEL LENGTH BUTT NECK BEAD TAPER

Vater Rikki Rockett Bottle Rockett
Look like an old coke bottle on the handle but are surprisingly light and hard to drop. They give good sound on the cymbals and the toms so there all around good.
I also have some Zildjian 5A's that came as a 10 pack I don’t know much about them but they don’t have any finish kind of like the Vater naked series but I got them before those came out, not as good as the Vater sticks but they work good for $1 a pair.

anyone know a good pair to try? I have to order some heads to replace the 2 year old ones that came with my set. (I know way past do)

no point in wastign stupid amounts of cash n sticks which break all teh dma time..... by carbo sticks.. they last forever and no breakages..... and they feel cool literally

I've got a pair of CarboSticks, I was hoping the feel would work for me-
I sure can't seem to break them! They weren't particularly cheap though, if I recall correctly...

regal tip Quantum 1000. been using then exclusively for 14yrs. size of a 5a, 16in with extremely short taper. this is great for someone who rides crash cym like i do. alot of wood up top means it takes longer to chew through and more weight so you don't have to hit as hard. and i use regal tip power rock in my left hand, also great for street fights

and the best part of the 1000 is the nylon marble! now this is not for the fancy dancey player with tons of notes. if you have to fight the Marshalls on stage. These babys cut like crazy. have never lost a tip in 14years, and i play directly on the bell with the tip, cuts better than the shoulder. can't say the same for vic firth and promark. every promark I've played i lose the tip, and their finish is like ky jelly

I bought the 1000's buy the brick 3yrs ago( granted i only use one at a time) and I'm thinkin it might be time for another one. i'm down to about 5 sticks also never had the weight vary from stick to stick. vic firth is the worst for weight from set to set

I use the Pro-Mark 5AL

Vic Firth American classic metal (red tip). It's Tommy Lee's old signature stick. I don't care for Tommy Lee, but he did have a good taste in a stick model.

The stick im using at the moment and what id most likley stick 2 for the time being is Pro-mark Mike Portnoy's signiture model sticks.
Theyre long slender,similar too a 7A with a nylon tip but the taper is quite thick which i like :p

I just switched from the Vic Firth Steve Gadd's to the Dave Weckl Evolutions.

For rock and jazz, it's working for me as the "all in 1" type of stick.

FWIW, I switched from using V/C 5BN's for my rock gigs. I'm getting more control, better ride sound, and it takes less effort to move around the kit.

Joey Jordinson(sp?) AHEAD sticks. Bought them for a whimn, loved them. bought a new pair a few days ago. they just felt right at the store, and even better at the kit.

I use promark 2b w/nylon tip. I like the ping i get on the ride. Plus i'm naturally a heavy hitter so light sticks feel strange to me.

To keep it simple, I use Vic Firth 2B & 7A Nylon Tip, or (Powerpro) 747 Rock nylon tip. I love nylon tipped. I don't know why, but it just feels like a better balance in my hands than with a wood tip, but I do like the earthy sound of a wood tip on my 18" crashride.

Hey, it's me, That One Guy, over there with a machinegun.

I play with ProMark 727 Japanese Shira Kashi White Oak with nylon tips. I have found that I have to use an Oak stick as opposed to Hickory to get the sticks to last any decent amount of time. I'll typically burn through $30-$40 in sticks in a single one night show, and that's with the oaks! hahaha You could easily double that cost or more if I were to go back to Hickory sticks. I used to use the 747 Oaks with wood tips for the longest time, but finally grew too frustrated with constantly breaking and splintering the tips that I decided to go ahead and make the switch to nylon. I have never broken a nylon tip and I must say that they've gotten so much better now about glueing them on that I haven't had one go shooting off into my bass player in something like two years now.

As for the stick size change, I had undergone surgery on my wrist and thumb (real fun for a working drummer! lol) and had gigs I had to cover with my hand still in a cast. I wasn't able to control the larger, heavier 747's very well so I tried out the 727's and found I could get the job done, cast and all. After healing, I kept toying around with the 727's and discovered that I was still getting the drive and power from my strokes, but with the slight trimming of weight my stick speed was noticably affected and I was much more in tune with moving through changes in dynamics. Having become accustomed to those heavy 747's, my hands were able to manipulate the 727's with much less muscular tiring at faster speeds, plus I was able to literally feel the difference when I came to a softer passage in a song and I had to pull things back a bit. Much easier to accomplish than with my heavier, longer 747's. So I stayed with them permanently.

But I must say, hearing all of you talk about the Vaters has me intrigued enough that I am considering picking up a few pairs to give them a test drive. I'm not disappointed in my 727 Oaks and don't anticipate switching, but just the same why miss out on an opportunity to explore? That's what we do, right?
