Doesnt matter wether its to a song or improvised...mine is improvised and ull probably notice as there are loads of mistakes.

And it doesnt matter about the quality of the video...anything from the top notch video cameras to phone cameras (like mine)

Great playing! How often do you go out with Ike Turner? That looks like a really fun gig.

I don't play with him any longer. Last tour I did with him was last June in Spain.

I'm gonna be doing some stuff with Janiva Magness, as well as my own group Playground Slap feat. Mike Keneally (Frank Zappa's last guitarist). There's some vids up of us on my YouTube.

From what I can tell, and correct me if I'm wrong, that's a Darbouka, not a Tabla. Table come in pairs- a small drum (wooden) and a larger one(metal). The heads have a small pad (puddi) which leads me to believe that your drum there is not of the Tabla family.

Nice playing BTW. I couldn't do that.....

you're correct. from what i understand, depending on where it was made it's also called a dumbek, but then again there's a billion names for goblet drums (depending on region). from what i've read, the goblet drum was believed to be invented before the chair!

First thanks for your feedback I always apprieciate someone taking the time!
I am pretty sure the drum is a Tabla.
I got the drum as a gift from a foreign exchange student from Saudi Arabia whom was renting a room from my mom some years ago.
I remember asking him a few times to stick its name in my head so as to not forget what it was called...and he refered to it as the Tabla drum.
However I have never looked it up or researched it for myself.

I'm a congero/timbalero...this Tabla being a gift grabbed my attention with its way of having such a thick bass tone that lingers...among all the other tones.

I think maybe your friend was mistaken about the type of drum, as the size, head type, and apparent lug configuration suggests it's definitely not a tabla, but a darbuka or doumbek. Here's some pics for comparison.
It was hard to tell for sure what the rest of your drum looks like as the video is very dark, but based on what we can see, it couldn't be a traditional tabla.

Yep. My backyard. Schuh is undoubtedly a great drummer, too. If not for several regrettable mistakes we'd be talking about Schuh away the way we talk about another Phoenix product, Lewis Nash. I can't imagine what he might say about himself if that happened. Probably nothing different. The Phoenix market sort of inspires these kind of insipid battles. It's just nasty competitive, and some good talent has fled to other markets because of it. Although I can't say Dennis doesn't deserve the grief he gets.

I stopped reading the newsgroup years ago and never missed the antagony. I did however miss interacting with quality people such as yourself, and I'm glad to find you on myspace and boards like this.

Actually I think my next video will be some kind of Afro Cuban concept in 6/8. After that I'll probably only youtube videos with bands and/or other drummers for awhile.

I'll put together some funk thing after I start working with Mr. Rabb. I would think I'm going to get insight schooled with him. Still I've got some Miles Davis On the Corner funk stuff on the new CD that I hope is out by the summer. But it would have been nice to have had some lessons with Johnny beforehand...oh well.

Schuh is a good drummer but his attitude and complete disdain for anything other than his narrow description of jazz completely turns me off. I can't listen to him. Dave Weckl is the same way with me. At one time I owned every Weckl album there was and after one too many encounters with his personality I pitched them all.

I used to work for a guy years ago and he had a beautiful secretary of whom every guy in the place would drool over. She completely played on that and eventually I came to learn the difference between aesthetic beauty and inner beauty. On the outside, she was fine enough to make you cry. But when you weighed what was on the inside against that, you'd turn around and run as fast as you could, screaming at this hideous beast before you.

The aforementioned drummers have that same effect on me.

I have experienced this type of scenario. Which has raised and set in stone my appreciation for humility. Weckl falls into this category same with Billy Sheehan.

Comming across a female with that outer beauty matched with it therein,,,the kind lol that makes you want to cry is seemingly about as likely as being at a stop light next to some watt-age pounding from a car thats not rap/hip hop..
